Cloth Diaper Basics: What is a diaper pail?
November 2, 2014 5:24 pm | by

diaperpail-4001Picture this: Your wet bag is filled with a growing pile of dirty cloth diapers — so much so that it’s bursting at the seams. So what’s a mom to do? Well, if you have enough cloth diapers for a full load of laundry, you should run to the wash machine and clean that mess. But, if it isn’t laundry day, you can toss those dirties in a diaper pail until the time comes.

We often hear nightmares about parents losing part or all of their cloth diaper stash due to mold, mildew or worse. The good news is that these issues are easily avoidable, especially with a wet bag or diaper pail, and we’re going to tell you how! The trick is knowing how to properly put away your wet and dirty diapers until laundry day.
A diaper pail is one of the easiest ways to store soiled diapers and wipes, especially when it’s conveniently placed in your nursery or by your changing table. When it comes to finding a diaper pail, the first thing to consider is how much space you have available. If you’re in tight quarters, it may not be the best option so try having a couple of large, hanging wet bags around like this.
Next, let’s consider the impact of the diaper pail. Do you want something that can be easily accessed by a curious toddler or stink up the house? We didn’t think so. Opt for a diaper pail with a lid. Just make sure to use one that generates air flow. Vented pails are a great option, as the air flow will help prevent issues with your diapers. Vented pails can be a little tricky to find in some stores, but we have one that we really love here. It even comes with a carbon filter to help keep smells at bay.
The final thing to consider when investing in a diaper pail is what type of liner you will use. Fabric liners are important because they help with air flow and they are also washable and re-useable. We suggest a PUL or nylon pail liner that you can just wash with your cloth diaper laundry, which you will want to do. With a liner, simply take it out of your pail and use it to easily haul your diapers to the wash machine.
Of course, you are always welcome to find a type of diaper pail that fits your decor, space or budget. Several household items will double as one, but remember, selecting a diaper pail or wet bag that allows air flow will save you laundry time later and help prevent issues like stink or mold.
As a reminder, mold will look like little black dots scattered in the fibers of your cloth diapers. Mildew looks more like a rash and is usually a brown or rust color, often found in patches. Both are preventable if you wash your diapers every other day.
