It’s March 14… 3/14… whatever way you slice it, it’s Pie Day and Pi Day and Albert Einstein’s birthday! So you’ll have to forgive us but we’ll take any excuse to have pie! If you’re looking for another excuse to eat pie (like us) National Pie day is January 23rd, so we’ll be sure to mark our calendars to eat pie on that day as well!
By now you may be thinking – what is she talking about? So here’s where I give a little glimpse into Cotton Babies traditions. A few of them are:
- Soup Day: Everyone brings in their crockpots full of soup and we all eat!
- Thanksgiving/Christmas Lunch: We usually have a Thanksgiving/Christmas holiday lunch for the staff because we are too busy packing orders in December to plan a party. At that party, we play Rob Your Neighbor with ridiculous gifts from the $1 store, and it is a blast
- And that brings us to Pie Day! Mmmmm. It is exactly what you think – everyone brings in pie, and we eat! I asked Jenn Labit for a quote about Pie Day and she said, “…it’s my second favorite day at Cotton Babies.” We’ll leave her first favorite day a mystery for now.
We’re noticing we do a lot “traditions” focused on food, perhaps we need to schedule a staff 5K too.
π (pi)
Now that I’ve written a bunch of words about the food we eat at Cotton Babies, (I left out all the excuses we make up to eat Krispy Kreme and the crazy amount of money I have personally spent running to Quik Trip for Ben & Jerry’s Tonight Dough), maybe I should get down to the real subject for today… the mathematical constant π (pi). The definition of π is commonly defined as the ration of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. It is an irrational number, which means it can’t be written as an exact fraction and in the decimal form, it never ends. The latest digit calculated was in 2010 by Nicholas Sze, of tech firm Yahoo… it was the two-quadrillionth digit! 2,000,000,000,000,000th!!! It took 23 days and 1,000 of Yahoo’s computers.
You go Glenn Coco!
What does that two-quadrillionth digit help mathematicians calculate??? We think at this point, it’s more about bragging rights so – You go Glenn Coco! AKA, Mr. Sze. And we’re cheering on the future mathematicians currently rocking their Albert bumGenius cloth diapers… Who knows! Maybe your baby will break the next π calculation record!
There’s also something called Piphilology, the practice of memorizing large numbers of digits of π, and world records are kept by the Guinness World Records. {insert shocked face!}

Favorite pie… hmm. I’d have to say it’s a pie that I make that my family has fondly named “drunken” apple pie because I add Crown Royals Apple to the apples while they cook for the filling. Gives it such a depth of flavor, and the alcohol of course cooks out so you could easily eat the whole thing. Not that I’ve done that….

I only eat my apple pie. I peel , and core the apples myself. I make everything by hand, crust and all. It’s the best apple pie you will ever eat. In fact you can’t eat other pies after mine. It’s that good!
