Meet Maggie

Introducing our Newest Genius Series Print, Maggie!

Meet Maggie, the newest addition to the Genius Series and this week’s Truly Genius Tuesday feature! This lovely print has been in the works for quite awhile, so we are very excited to finally reveal her to you!

Who was Maggie?

Maggie Lena Walker was an African American mother, teacher, businesswoman, community leader, a civil rights activist, and the first female bank president in the United States.

Maggie founded the St. Luke Penny Savings Bank in 1903 as a result of her dedication to the Independent Order of St. Luke (IOSL), an organization that cared for the sick and promoted humanitarian causes. The bank later merged with two other banks and is still in operation today as Consolidated Bank and Trust, the oldest existing African American-owned and operated business in the United States.

Maggie’s work at the IOSL started at the age of 14 and continued through her entire adult life as she held leadership roles within the organization. In 1902, she established a newspaper for the IOSL, which soon led to the charter of the St. Luke Penny Savings Bank.

Maggie continued her work for the African American community in 1905 when she opened the St. Luke Emporium. This department store not only offered African-American women opportunities for work, but also gave the black community access to cheaper goods.

Through her accomplishments, Maggie offered tangible improvements in the way of life for African Americans and women. As a testament to her impact on American history, the National Park Service currently operates Maggie’s home in the Jackson Ward Historic District, a 19-century residential district located in Richmond, Virginia that exemplifies the success of African American entrepreneurship.

We are proud and honored to now welcome Maggie into our Hall of Genius.

I’ve always been most fond of lillies. When I was a little girl, my aunt lived next door to our house, and she always had gardens just filled with flowers (my mother mostly grew succulents, which also have a special place in my heart), and I always loved the perfectly white lillies she grew.
