It’s Truly Genius Tuesday, and we’re taking you on a trip with Osa! Osa Johnson was married to adventure, she shared her love story with the world as an author, explorer, photographer, filmmaker and naturalist. With her husband, Martin Johnson, by her side, she explored and documented the unknown lands of Africa, South Pacific Islands and more. Osa joined our Genius Series in December 2014.
Married to adventure
“I went to Africa…for just the same reason that lots of girls settled down on Main Street back home—just to be with my husband,” – Osa Johnson, Photoplay article “A Wife in Africa”.
Osa’s “main street” wasn’t your run-of-the-mill main street. She made the world her town and spent her life exploring it, while sharing her stories with the rest of us. Osa married Martin when she was 16 years old and together, the two pursued all sorts of adventure.
The Johnsons created several motion pictures that captivated the world. They quickly became celebrities to the American public and received extensive media coverage . In 1940 Osa Johnson’s autobiography, I Married Adventure was the best-selling non-fiction book. We love that Osa set out on an unknown trail when she was a young girl and spent her entire life searching every inch of it.
“Unexpected difficulties, I think, are at once the challenge and the charm of the lives of all explorers.” Osa Johnson, I Married Adventure
