Patriotic Genius

Patriotic Genius Mary Pickersgill

Each Truly Genius Tuesday, we explore the lives of those who have inspired the unique cloth diaper prints in our Genius Series. We’ve talked about mathematics, discovered the geniuses of music and movies, and explored the world of plants and animals. We’ve met Maggie, traveled to the rainforest with Chico, and this week – in honor of Flag Day – we are talking about our patriotic genius, Mary Pickersgill!

Meet our Patriotic Genius: Mary Pickersgill

Mary Pickersgill was an American business woman and well-known seamstress. She created the Great Garrison Flag that flew during the 1814 Battle of Baltimore. Aside from her flag-making business, Mary also addressed social issues for disadvantaged women, including housing, employment and financial aid. As President of the Impartial Female Humane Society, she opened a home for elderly women that later expanded into an entire retirement community named in her honor, as was the World War II Liberty ship, the SS Mary Pickersgill.

The Star Spangled Banner Flag

Mary Pickersgill‘s Great Garrison Flag is also known as the Star Spangled Banner Flag. At the time, it was the largest garrison flag ever flown and the inspiration behind a poem written by Francis Scott Key, now known as the United States National Anthem, “The Star Spangled Banner.” Today, the original 30 by 42-foot flag, created by Mary, resides in the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History.

Pickergill’s dedication to her craft and her country is worthy of the title, “Patriotic Genius.” She is an outstanding person who used her skills, talents, and resource to help make the world a better place.

Shop Mary Pickersgill

I fell in love with Mary Pickersgill last year, but I had a kiddo that was just starting potty training, so I couldn’t justify the purchase. Now that I have my first little girl on the way, I want her first BG to be Mary!
