The wrong way to cloth diaper…from the experts

When my husband and I started cloth diapering we felt like everyone was the expert except for us.  All of my friends used “lingo” we had never heard of.  We didn’t know all the different types of diapers or even what we needed to buy to properly cloth diaper- what the heck was a wet bag or a diaper sprayer?  Things we learned along the way…

If you buy diapers that you have to stuff, never wait until the middle of the night to stuff them.  It’s never a good idea.  And if you can’t find the inserts because someone put them in the sock basket, do not opt for stuffing them with wash cloths.

Consequently, always remember to stuff you diaper.  If you don’t, you might not have the best morning, and chances are if you have to wake up and change the baby’s bedding and give her a bath because you forgot to stuff her diaper, that same morning another kid will send a blueberry smoothie cascading down the stairs and the other two kids will fight over which shoes to wear while they miss the bus.

I prefer the diapers that I don’t have to stuff, then the whole diaper is connected and I don’t have to find missing pieces.

Do not move out of your house and leave your very nice diaper sprayer attached to the toilet.  Once you move, they will not give it back to you.  Then you will have to buy a new diaper sprayer.  Also, just buy the best one, because if you buy the cheapest one, it will not work as well as your old one and you will be very annoyed.  You want your diaper sprayer to work because you have to use it a couple times a day.

Do not teach your 2 year old how to use the diaper sprayer- obviously this one is self explanatory.

Do not try to open your wet bag with your teeth because your hands are full.  You will be able to taste your child’s dirty diapers in your mouth for a week.  So gross!

When you cloth diaper, I have found it is really nice to be prepared.  I am not very organized, but if I can manage to make sure I have a small wet bag and couple clean diapers in my diaper bag, I will have a much better outing.  When I get home, I always make myself put the wet bag in the laundry room.  I have forgotten a couple of times and it’s never good whether you are cloth diapering or using disposables to find a forgotten diaper under the seat in your car a couple months later- can I get a witness?!

I am sure that there are many more things to learn regarding cloth diapering.  Now we have two in cloth diapers and my favorite activity is to think of all the fun activities we can do with all the money we are saving with cloth diapers.

I really enjoy reading your website. I have done a lot of these. Leaving the wet diaper in the car, forgetting the insert etc… When you have three children all under the age of 3 it becomes a little overwhelming and you tend to forget things more easily especially if we are not very organized. Anyway, I wanted to know if crocheting a cotton diaper would work? I have crochet diaper covers but never thought about crocheting a cotton diaper. I’m going to give it a shot and see what happens. If you know anyone that has tried this method let me know. I would love to know if it works. If not I’ll let you know how it goes.
