Congratulations on choosing JOY with the Elemental Joy Cloth Diaper Kit! Here are some helpful tips to get you started.

Washing your diapers

The number #1 question about cloth diapers is “how do you wash them?”

Here’s some good news: it’s easy! Use a detergent that will properly clean your clothes. If your detergent is working to get stains out of baby’s clothes, it should work on cloth diapers.

Wash your Elemental Joy cloth diaper covers once before putting on your baby.
For maximum absorbency, wash and dry the 100% cotton inserts several times. By drying them on tumble dry low, they will get softer. Like a t-shirt, they will continue to get softer with use.

Getting the Perfect Fit

Elemental Joy one-size diaper covers fit most babies from 8-35 pounds, depending on the shape of your baby.

Snapped up to the smallest size should fit babies around 8-16 pounds.

Snapped on the medium setting should fit babies around 17-22 pounds.

Completely unsnapped with 3 rows of snaps showing should fit babies around 23-35 pounds.

If you don’t feel like you are getting a great fit following those guidelines, make changes to do what works best for your baby. The goal is to make sure there are no gaps around the waist or thighs where the diapers could potentially leak. If the diaper leaves a red line, similar to a sock, that is probably ok. Do not put your diaper on the baby too tight so that it makes them uncomfortable.

Prevent Leaks

There are several things you can do to prevent leaks. First, make sure you have a good fit.

Second, make sure you are changing baby’s diaper as frequently as needed. We recommend changing baby’s diaper every 2 hours.

Third, make sure you have enough absorbency. For a heavy wetter, you may need to add a doubler. A Stay-Dry Doubler is made of microfiber and quickly pulls moisture away from baby’s skin. This is helpful for babies who hate the feeling of wetness.

Another option for increasing absorbency is hemp. A Hemp Babies Doubler can hold a lot of liquid, but is slower to absorb. Hemp is great for overnights or naps.
