Mom’s Week: Love, Mama by Jessica
May 13, 2012 3:35 pm | by

Editor’s Note: As part of our Mom’s Week celebration, we asked our blog contributors to write a special post entitled, “Love, Mom” Throughout the week we will be sharing their posts with you. We hope you enjoy them and it inspires you to take a few moments to write to the most important people in your life and to sign it “Love, Mom”. ———- To my sweet baby girl, Can I still call you that? I know you’re not really a baby anymore. And if I didn’t know, you tend to hit me over the head with that fact with

Taking care of the girls
May 9, 2012 1:55 pm | by

Disclaimer: Today’s blog post is not for the faint of heart. This blog is written for the ladies, and for the ladies only. If you are my ex-boyfriend, male co-worker, brother-in-law or my father, please stop reading this post now. You cannot unread the things I am about to type. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. Ladies, we need to have a little chat, woman to woman. I have a little Oprah-style confession to make. I’ve been wearing the wrong size bra. Wow, it feels good to have that off my chest (pun intended). But seriously, when was the last

Lullabies
May 5, 2012 11:52 am | by

Just like Claire, we sing a lot throughout the day. I make up little songs for finishing meals, sing the ABCs when brushing Vicki’s teeth, and nothing beats a good rendition of “The Wheels on the Bus” to calm down a cranky toddler in the car. But my favorite time to sing is bedtime. When I was a little girl, my mom used to sing us lullabies every night. The same songs, in the same order, all snuggled together on one of our beds. It was our signal that it was time to sleep. It was our reminder that we

Making It Up and Packing it with Cheese
May 2, 2012 11:03 am | by

I didn’t spend much time around babies and kids in my younger years. I never babysat (well, I did once and it ended with me on the couch sobbing because I had NO idea what I was doing) and most of my friends were only children or the youngest of their brothers and sisters. So when I finally had my own babies I didn’t have a taste for children’s music and I most certainly didn’t know the words. So I made them up. Part of me has always lived in fear that my oldest would sing our family version of

Incorporating Music into Our Day
April 25, 2012 12:14 pm | by

Music is a big part of our day. We have dance parties, listen to music while cooking and sing songs before bed. I’m not sure we could get through our day without music! There usually comes a point in each day when the boys are bored (and therefore a little cranky) and we need something to shake everyone back into more positive thinking. You know what I’m talking about- when every suggested activity gets shot down and everyone wants to do something but no one wants to do anything. This is when we turn to dance parties. I have a

Reusable Swim Diapers
April 20, 2012 12:22 pm | by

Back when Vicki was 6 months old, I started taking her to swimming lessons. I prepared weeks in advance by registering her for swimming, buying her a bathing suit, and purchasing a reusable swim diaper. I was good to go. Everything went swimmingly (pun intended) for a few months, and we greatly enjoyed our weekly swim. Then it got cold and I dropped the ball and forgot to register for the winter session. By the time we went back to swimming, Vicki needed a new bathing suitand she had grown out of her swim diaper. As I was pressed for

Rainy days and Mondays
April 11, 2012 1:53 pm | by

I used to love rainy days… until I had children. Why is it that toddlers don’t appreciate rainy days? Now I just wistfully reflect on the Karen Carpenter song and the days I could curl up on the sofa and read or watch movies all day long without interruption. The same goes for sick days, bed-rest during pregnancy or any of those other types of days where you just want to stay in bed all day. Once you have children, these days often become a new sort of challenge, something you may even dread rather than look forward to.

Traveling Mishaps
March 28, 2012 2:11 pm | by

We’ve been fortunate enough to take Vicki with us whenever we have traveled. While that provided many opportunities for fun and adventure, it’s also risky to be that far away from home, away from our routine, and experiencing a ton of new things all at once. No matter how much we plan in advance, something always goes awry. We’ve been through plenty of sleepless nights as she adjusted to a hotel room and different time zones, and had a few plane trips where the screaming just wouldn’t stop. But nothing compares to these two unforgettable memories. The very first time

Swaddle ‘Em Up and Throw ‘Em Down.
March 10, 2012 12:48 pm | by

I’m just kidding there, I would never throw my baby. But I do still swaddle her at 10 months. My first baby was swaddled until she was a year old and I’d like to believe it’s because my womb is so comfortable they can’t bear the wide open world around them as they sleep. There’s always talk about SCHEDULES! as it relates to naps and bedtime and oh believe me, I have a schedule. But nothing solidifies the “SHOOSH AND GO TO SLEEP NOW” message like swaddling to my babies. With my first, Addie, there weren’t really any fancy swaddling

Dealing with sleep deprivation
March 7, 2012 3:00 am | by

How do you start a blog post about sleep deprivation, when you’re a little sleep deprived? Much like you start or don’t ever finish anything: poorly and slowly! Are you reading this at 3am while someone very small is a) eating b) crying or c) pooping? Or is it nice and sunny outside but you’re a little disgruntled because you did not really get as much sleep as you’d wanted out of the nighttime hours? I know how you feel! As a new mom, sleep deprivation is unavoidable. It’s probably one of the first pieces of advice you received when
