Real Mom Talk: Baby Proofing for a New Crawler
April 24, 2013 5:30 pm | by

My almost 6-month old is crawling already. Yeah, I know… I didn’t get much of a chance to get ready for that one. Now that he’s suddenly very mobile, I’ve had to remember what it’s like to have a baby crawling around the house. My older kids are somewhat reckless but at least I can tell them not to do something because it is dangerous and I know that they will have at least understood me, if not listen to me. The baby, unfortunately, will neither understand nor heed my words. So baby proofing… Electrical Cords     I didn’t realize

Winter First Foods
January 30, 2013 10:30 am | by

My first three boys were all born in the spring or early summer, which meant that they were ready to start eating solid foods as fall turned into winter. This is, in my humble and decidedly non-medical opinion, the best time of year to start on solids. Why? Well because squash* and sweet potatoes are in season! Technically, we are currently just past the peak season for these veggies, but you can still find fresh and flavorful squash and sweet potatoes in the stores and at some farmer’s markets (depending on where you live). I think they make great first

No Spend January
January 16, 2013 11:26 am | by

The start of a new year always brings with it the inevitable question, “What are your resolutions?” While I’m not really a resolutions kind of girl (it feels a little too much like homework to me), I do think that a new year can be a good time to start working towards some larger goals, if only because it’s an easy time to mark on the calendar. Just like it’s easier to start a diet on a Monday. Or maybe that‘s just me. I think less in terms of “I’ll eat six vegetables every day” (which is a worthy aspiration)

Freezer Meals
October 17, 2012 1:00 pm | by

With the arrival of Baby #4 looming on the horizon (that Halloween due date is approaching more quickly than I’d like… thankfully I have a history of sailing right past that due date and having baby hang on for as long as possible), I’ve started to think about getting my freezer ready. While my husband is wonderful and more than willing to cook when he’s called upon to do so, that’s not normally part of his household contribution. I mean, he basically does everything else so it’s the least I can do. Witt that in mind, I’d like to have

Kids + Pets

The first thing that my husband and I did after getting our first apartment together (almost two months after we actually had gotten married, thanks to being stationed at first in two different states by the Army) was get a dog. We adopted Gunner, a 1-ish year old shepherd/hound mix, from a local shelter. He was adorable and HYPER. We literally wouldn’t let him sleep during the day so that he wouldn’t run into windows and walls at night. After a few months he settled in and calmed down a bit (naps were now permitted) so naturally we got another

Memorial Day
May 26, 2012 8:34 am | by

Memorial Day here in the States brings to mind pools, parties and barbeques for most people. And it is a fun kick-off to summer, especially when people have a long weekend to celebrate. But I also like to spend this time thinking about what Memorial Day is actually meant for- honoring veterans and military service members, especially those that have given their lives for our country. Maybe as an Army spouse I’m more likely to think about this aspect of the holiday than other people might, but I think it’s important for us all to remember current service members and

Going From One Child to Two
May 23, 2012 9:37 am | by

Being pregnant with your second child brings up a lot of worries for some moms- Will I love this baby as much as I love my first? Will they get along? Is this the best or worst idea I’ve ever had? How will I figure out which kid to respond to first? Will it be more than I can handle? Let me first assure you that it most likely won’t be more than you can handle. Here’s a secret about the second time around- it’s much easier. It’s not the first time you’re changing your baby’s diaper. It’s not the

Pockets vs. All-in-Ones

Prepping Cloth Diapers

So you’re shopping for cloth diapers and wondering how to choose between pockets or all-in-ones? Let’s discuss. Pockets: One of the great things about pocket diapers is that you can adjust the absorbency based on what you need. Baby wearing the diaper overnight? More inserts! Just wearing the diaper for an hour before bed? Not so many inserts. This is also good for those of us that have heavy-wetters. Some kids just need a diaper that is more absorbent and when you’re using pocket diapers you have control over that. Of course this means that you’re going to have put

Incorporating Music into Our Day
April 25, 2012 12:14 pm | by

Music is a big part of our day. We have dance parties, listen to music while cooking and sing songs before bed. I’m not sure we could get through our day without music! There usually comes a point in each day when the boys are bored (and therefore a little cranky) and we need something to shake everyone back into more positive thinking. You know what I’m talking about- when every suggested activity gets shot down and everyone wants to do something but no one wants to do anything. This is when we turn to dance parties. I have a
