Baby Food Comparison
April 24, 2008 10:00 pm | by

I wish I could give you scratch and sniff internet for this post because the difference would just blow you away! This is a little experiment you may just have to try at home to really get the full effect.

I purchased a jar of baby food peas and a bag of frozen peas. When I got home I microwaved a bowl of the frozen peas and then whirled it in the blender for a moment or two. Then I put the two kinds of peas side by side so you could see the difference.

Oh how I wish you could smell it too! The frozen peas smell so sweet and fresh and the baby food ones… well I can guess why so many kids hate their veggies if this is their experience with them. The jarred peas hardly smell like food at all.

The textures are pretty different as well, as you can clearly see. The jarred food has an almost gritty feel to it and the frozen ones are just what you would expect from some peas. There are still little pea-casings in the frozen peas, and you may find those in your child’s diaper later on. But they are certainly nothing to worry about.

This experiment works with other veggies as well; carrots, squash, green beans, potatoes, you name it. Give it a whirl (in the blender) and see what you think!

I do 100% organic homemade food for my daughter and she loves it. I started off with an organic brand of jarred bananas for her first food and after seeing the brown/orange color and the strange texture, I decided I would make my own! When I wouldn’t even lick the spoon of the jar food, I knew it was time to switch, and I agree, it smells so much better fresh! It really does not take much longer either!

a side note, you should be careful about the nitrates in any veggies grown in the ground (carrots, potatoes, turnips, etc.) I have been told if you buy organic its the best option for these foods. I am sure the occasional regular is fine, but if your baby goes nuts for carrots, spend the extra $2 and get organic.

Hi, I just found you thru another blog and have gone back and read some of your previous posts!! Love your blog! I have 2 boys ages 4 yrs. and 23 months and we just switched the toddler to cloth a couple of weeks ago. I am so thrilled we did! I chose chinese prefolds and Bummis Super Brite Covers (at least for now because of $$). We are expecting #3 in September and I haven’t decided if I’m going to invest in AIO’s or something else for baby, but we will definitely be using cloth!

I can attest to the carrots. We unfortunately fed my daughter storebought food for a little while (because we were young and stupid). The Gerber carrots are brown; real carrots are bright orange. And I’m still trying to figure out what gives storebought baby food its slimy quality. I guess they want to be sure it slides right down!

The picture says it all! I can almost smell them anyway. 🙂 No wonder kids don’t like veggies!
