We are very much into our older daughter creating music. She has lots and lots of musical instruments to play. She has keyboards, a drum kit, and many more interesting things to create music. My husband is very into music, so she gets to play around with his equipment a lot.
We have lots and lots of art supplies that are always available to her. She has an easel, paints, play doh, crayons. I am not one of those moms who is crazy about keeping the house perfect, so we even have some drawings on our walls 😉
Being a pastry chef, I also love to bake with my daughter. I let her help me bake cookies and cakes. I let her choose and help with her birthday cakes every year. She loves it!!!
We love our bumGenius diapers!!!

Here is the actual post:
Part of encouraging children to discover their own creativeness means allowing them the freedom to become who they will. With four children between the ages of eight months and five years, it’s no small statement to say they are all uniquely different in their personalities. That’s obvious, and any mom can tell you the same thing. What was surprising to me when I first became a mom, however, was to discover these personalities were visible right from birth. The baby that was so relaxed right from the start, for example, is still the one who grabs any chance she can to cuddle with her dad or I. And contrarily, the one who- as a baby- burst into tears when a stranger came in her sight is still sensitive to new situations today.
How, then, does a parent encourage such ranging personalities to grow together while becoming their own individual who realizes their own talents? In our house it’s not fancy toys or electronic gadgets that accomplish this. It’s not constant direction from me, but it’s giving them the foundation of an idea and letting them build upon it. It’s giving my son a pan full of flour and letting him figure out what to do with it. And then, it’s standing back and letting the floor become covered in a fine dusting of flour while he ploughs it into make believe snow banks with his trucks. It’s giving a child a lump of dough while you’re making bread to let her do what she will with it. And it’s not worrying that the little clumps of dough she formed are bumpy and too small. It’s letting her see the results of her work and being proud of her little accomplishments.
I have learned one of the most important things about raising kids is to not worry about the mess that results. There was a time when the mess worried me. I was convinced I wasn’t a good enough mom if the dishes weren’t done and the laundry was piling up. And I would feel guilty for not being this ideal homemaker I dreamed of being. Time and children have changed that, and while a clean house is still a dream, I’m okay with the mess. Allowing children to make a mess and get their hands dirty is one of the greatest ways to encourage creativity in them. It’s when the kitchen floor is covered in play dough or the table is a mess of brightly colored paint splashes, when their true spirits become visible.
One of the greatest rewards as a mother is watching my children discover their own strengths. Letting their imaginations make a town out of wooden blocks, a hunting camp out of blankets strung across chairs, a school bus out of pillows. These are the things that get them thinking, spark their creativity, and make them discover the things that bring them joy.
So much of what we become is the characteristics we were born with given a lifetime of opportunity to expand. Rigorous schedules and extracurricular activities at frighteningly young ages are not the things that bring about the joy of childhood in our children. But spending time with them- coloring at the kitchen table, laying on your backs under the stars, or pointing out cloud animals marching across the sky- these are things that open up children to their own happiness.
Creativity is not something that is taught to our children, but rather something that is discovered by them. Give them the opportunity to make messes and mistakes, bad decisions and wrong turns. Only through the process of trial and error can they truly discover what they are capable of doing. And how exciting it is to watch that discovery happen.
I hope it’s not too late to enter! I wrote up a heartfelt respnose to this question on my blog. Even if it’s too late, I had fun writing this as it is all so close to my heart! Thanks!!

http://motheringspirit.wordpress.com/2010/10/11/nurturing-a-creative-spirit/
One of the cloth diapering companies I love – Cotton Babies – recently posed a thoughtful question to its loyal following: How do you encourage a creative, artistic spirit in your young child?
This question gave me pause. For parents of babies and toddlers, so much energy is devoted to the basics of feeding, cleaning, and soothing. Where is there time and space to nurture a creative and artistic spirit?
Caring for S’s creative side can seem like a “someday” prospect. When he is bigger, we’ll take him to the art museum. When his attention span is longer, we’ll enjoy the children’s concerts at the orchestra. When his hands get more dextrous, we’ll dive into the world of crayons and clay and crafts.
But what about today? As the original question notes, this is not just a developmental concern – it’s a spiritual matter as well. I believe our human spirit longs for beauty, for imagination, for the freedom and experssion that art and music and dance and literature let loose.
How do I, as a mothering spirit, call forth S’s artistic spirit – today, as he is, as a busy, squirmy toddler?
I sing to him – over breakfast, before naps, after bruises, during bath.
I read to him – picture books, board books, prayer books, grown-up books.
I play with him – blocks and balls, animals and cars.
I talk with him – about our day, about our friends, about our hopes, about our loves.
But this question challenges me to do more.
We can make more time for music, for silly dance parties in the living room and banging sessions on the keyboard in the basement. There are songs in each of us waiting to be heard.
We can make our own books, the first scribbling creations of a toddler who can grasp a crayon (or the first scribbling words of a mother braving the blank page). There are stories to be told and imaginations to cultivate.
We can venture outside more to play, as S’s legs get stronger and the sunny fall days beckon. There is nature to explore, to question, to wonder.
We can learn new words and new languages, the ones we create and the ones the world has to offer. There are worlds that open up when we push beyond our borders.

How do you encourage a creative, artistic spirit in your baby, toddler or young child?
I find ways to have them draw, color and paint. We will use different things (apples, hands, even made our own paint with food coloring and kyro syurp). I also show them how to reuse things like magazines for making collages and old shoe boxes and tissue paper for making storage boxes. And my daughter (18mo) loves to dance so I play music every day and sing with her and dance around with her

How do you encourage a creative, artistic spirit in your baby, toddler or young child?
by Misty Brammer on Monday, October 11, 2010 at 12:34am
Our little boy has a very active imagination. We like to encourage his creativity by giving him lots of creative play toys. He loves to build things out of cardboard blocks and use his imagination to build all kinds of crazy things. The best way I have found to encourage him is to sit and listen to his stories and rants about his made up adventures and play along and really get into the story. It makes him so happy to hear you get involved in his story. It creates a good bond between us. 🙂

Trying to win a set of the new Artist series from Cotton Babies. Q: How do you encourage a creative, artistic spirit in your baby? A: I allow & encourage her to use her own VERY expressive voice to be loud, quiet, show excitement, & all other emotions that a 9 month old expresses. To encourage her creative fashionista …side – I let “2 diff.sock wearing” Daddy dress her in anything he wants. Some very cool colour and style creations.

So my daughter keeps going on about cottonbabies.com and how they are giving away some new cloth diaper and all you have to do is answer a question about inspiring creativity in a toddler.
She really wants them so I’m going to give it a go and hopefully win her a Christmas present I know she really wants !
When my grandbabies come over I inspire their creativity through baking, coloring, and letting them put on shows for their papa and I. If you give them the love and tools they need to be creative that should be inspiration enough.

Here is my answer to the question: “”How do you encourage a creative, artistic spirit in your baby, toddler or young child?” In my opinion, they could not have asked a better question! I am all about nurturing my children in various ways, at all stages of life! I have two boys, ages 2 and 9 months. There are several ways I encourage them to be creative and artistic. First off, my boys do not spend all day in front of the television, and they do not play any video games. Although there is nothing wrong with doing these things, in my opinion being glued to the television hinders imagination and creativity. Instead, we spend time painting, coloring, and making little craft projects. (Our upcoming craft project is to make pumpkins out of construction paper to hang on our front door).
I think one VERY important part of helping your child(ren) develop in their creativity and art is to simply follow their lead. For instance, my 2 year old is very interested in nature and bugs. So quite often we go outside and collect different kinds of bugs and we talk about them. I teach him what kind of bug it is that he found, the colors of the bug, what the bug eats, where the bug lives and so on. We do this in all areas that he shows interest in. When your kids are showing interest something, their little synapses in their brains are firing at will and searching for information! This is an ideal teaching time.
Another way I help my boys to be creative and artsy, has to do with the toys they have. They do not have many toys that serve one purpose only. Toys in our house can be described as pots and pans (drums), lots of art supplies and so on. We play games to include pretend games that foster imagination. One of our favorite games is when we pretend we are hiking in the jungle and we will talk about all the different kinds of animals we see! It is such fun!
Another way to foster creativity is to embrace nature. I have vowed to get my kids outside at least once every day. Even if its just to splash in the puddles as it is pouring down rain! Being outside in the fresh air does something to us. It refreshes and energizes us, and its just plain fun!”

http://companiontothewind.blogspot.com/2010/10/how-do-i-encourage-creative-artistic.html
Blog Post:
“I believe that if you do something with your children it can have a long lasting impact and can create a love for many things, arts, crafts, outdoors, or games for example. My child and myself are regular attendees of a quilting guild, an artists guild, and a scrapbooking club I believe the group environment helps inspire and see different ways of thinking. Another creative outlet our family loves to do together is cooking very free form, rarely do we use recipes and when we do rarely does what we make end up looking like the recipe. Granted we have had some weird stuff to eat, seaweed, olive, and sausage soup for an example, but we all enjoy the failures, even if it is just through laughter. Storytelling is another of our favorites, we read books, but the bed time story is always completely made up and can become a very long multi-night saga with children being characters, recently my little boy has been a knight, a wizard, a baseball enthusiast, and a frog. We also accept that being creative may lead to massive messes and even destruction, these things happen, and while we will sometimes try to redirect we do not punish these behaviors. Sometimes children need to see how something works, or really think the walls look better with a crayon mural, and we believe these to be healthy behaviors. “

How do you encourage a creative, artistic spirit in your baby, toddler or young child? I encourage my baby to be her own-self by reading to her, enjoying outdoors with her, and by using cloth diapers like bumGenius. Cotton Babies has great ideas also with tips from working mom’s like me.

Thanks!
I posted this question and my answer in a facebook group of over 600,000 moms. Not bad for advertising! (Do I get a free diaper for reaching that many mom’s?) =)
Here’s hoping for some good answers!

Children are creative and artistic by nature. To encourage their behavior, just hold back your own ideas and let them BE THEMSELVES!
I shared my thought on Facebook and also shared the link to your giveaway.

And here is my answer
My three year old son’s easel is located in our dining room where he has access to his paints, colors, watercolors, and markers at anytime. We have a storage shelf where more paper is stored, playdough and construction paper. I frame his work and display it in my husband’s office and in our home. When looking at public art we look for fimiliar items in art like colors, animals, shapes and people. He also has access to books about artists and their works. He has access to music with a toy drum, piano and other musical toys. It is exciting to be able to share art with my children. His little sister (5 months) is being exposed to music through a mozart toy. I can’t wait until she is old enough to experience the gooey paint between her fingers and toes. I also regularly visit blogs about how to incorporate art in our children’s lives. A good example is the artful parent blog(http://www.artfulparent.typepad.com/).

Here’s a link to my note:

The contents of that note:
With our toddler we encourage a lot of hands on play – rhythm instruments, crafts, balls, books. Things that allow him to direct his own discovery path within a safe setting (aka adult supervision). He loves to pound away on our Casio keyboard, sort his colored blocks, “mix” up a dish in his kitchen – and you can tell when he’s made a new connection between things because he does victory laps through the house.
We also have a 2 month old baby. With him we play music, engage him with textures and books, and let him interact as much as possible in our world. Babies and toddlers learn so much just from doing and seeing that we’ve always included the boys in what we’re doing. That means that sometimes it takes longer to do laundry or cook dinner because we’re talking about colors, textures, processes but that is the point of it all really. Passing something small and mundane to someone and then having them transform it – a culinary masterpiece, a new invention or product, a philosophical viewpoint. All important because it comes from them.

Cotton Babies is having a giveaway to win their Bumgenius Artist Series diapers. To enter you have to answer this question:
How do you encourage a creative, artistic spirit in your baby, toddler, or young child?
I encourage all three of my kids by letting them be kids. I don’t know how to NOT encourage my kids to be creative. Our home is filled with all sorts of crafts supplies and dress-up clothes but those things don’t get used as often as you would think. When I am working in my kitchen I have the radio playing and all three of my kids sing and dance right along with me. I read books at night and pretty much whenever they ask. During holidays we do a big craft project with the kids. This year for Halloween we are going to be painting pumpkins. Last year for Christmas I had the kids paint Christmas tree ornaments to give to relatives as gifts. The rest of the time we just have fun doing whatever it is we are doing. I think the biggest way of encouraging my kids is allowing them to join in on the everyday activities like the dancing in the kitchen while cooking and cleaning. Kids are so eager to learn things, they want to know about everything and they want to have fun. I love the imagination of a child, infact I think the question should be more of “How does you child encourage a creative, artistic spirit in you?” I know I am a lot more creative and artistic now that I am a mom. 5 yrs ago I can guarantee that you would not have caught me crawling around on my hands and knees pretending to be a bear, but its very likely to happen today.
I recommend checking out the new bumgenius Artist series diapers at http://www.cottonbabies.com

For Cotton Babies and Bumgenius: How do you encourage a creative, artistic spirit in your baby, toddler or young child? Well since my little one is so small we make sure that she has lots of experiences with new places and people and lots of new toys so she can learn and grow. We want her to experiences in life to be varied.

How do you encourage a creative, artistic spirit in your baby, toddler or you…ng child?
Well, the little miss is only 9 months old, BUT she is very observant and is constantly surveying the world around her. To help foster a creative spirit, we painted her room an eye-popping apple green, with black and white checkered and ladybug accents. No muted pastels here for this little girl. 😉
We also read her lots of stories and act out little songs to develop that young, ever-learning imagination and too-large-for-her-little-body personality!

To encourage creativity in my children we color, paint, do crafts, play with playdoh, dance, play pretend, bake, decorate the house for hoildays, play in the dirt and a whole lot more. The gift of being creative has been given to each one of us and all we have to do is create! If we grow this gift we will have a lifetime of sharing creativity with others around us. It is so important that as parents encourge creativity in our children and in the process we will also become more creative too!
