Prepping your cloth diapersCloth 101: Prepping your cloth diapers

Cloth diapers require a little bit of TLC but with a little big of info you can set yourself up for prepping your cloth diapers and you’re ready to go.

It’s true, you will need to wash your diapers a bit differently than you would with other laundry — from start to finish. Prepping your cloth diapers is pretty simple and we have a few tricks that can help make it even easier such as the wet towel tricks and regular washes with hot and cold cycles become part of your cloth diaper laundry routine.

So, when you pick up a bumGenius Freetime, Original 5.0Newborn or Flip diaper covers and Stay Dry inserts, what is the first thing you do to get these cloth diapers ready for use?

Prep!

Here’s how:

  1. Sort your diapers into like colors, just like you would any other laundry. Darker, bolder colors should be washed separately from lighter, pastel colors for the first few washes to avoid color transfer.
  2. Attach the laundry tabs on hook & loop diapers.
  3. Once you have your diapers sorted, we recommend washing once with detergent using a hot wash/cold rinse cycle on your machine.
  4. Line dry covers.
  5. Tumble dry bumGenius and Flip inserts on a low or medium heat setting.
  6. Stuff inserts into pocket style diapers like bumGenius Original 5.0.

Prepping Your Cloth Diapers with Natural Fibers

For prepping cloth diapers with natural fibers like bumGenius Elementals, Flip Day and Night Time Inserts, and Econobum, Chinese and Indian Prefolds, you will need to wash in hot water 3-5 times, drying between each wash to remove all the natural oils found in cotton fabric. By removing these oils, you are making the cotton more absorbent.
