Cloth 101: Washing Bright Colored Cloth Diapers

Prepping Cloth Diapers

Screen Shot 2014-02-16 at 5.04.47 PMPicture this: You’re washing a brand new load of cloth diapers — most of which are light colors like Noodle and White. You take your cloth diapers out of the wash machine and notice that the load is now an entirely different color. You sort through each cloth diaper in the laundry pile and discover that one of your new Sassy and Hummingbird diapers got thrown into the same load, causing the color to transfer!

Don’t let this happen to you! Wash your bright colored cloth diapers 3-5 times separately before washing with any other laundry!

For brighter, bolder colors likeHummingbird, Armadillo, Sassy, Countess, Clementine, Mirror, Twilight, Albert, Dazzle and Moonbeam, we recommend washing these diapers with ‘like’ colors for the first six washes to avoid any transfer of dye to other lighter colors. These do not have to be six consecutive washes before your first use. You can also wash these darker color diapers together.

Think of it this way: You wouldn’t wash a white T-shirt with your dark blue jeans, so don’t wash a Noodle bumGenius 4.0 with a Dazzle Flip. After you wash your brights six times, you can wash them with lighter colors and clean all your cloth diapers in the same laundry load.

The same rules apply for discontinued colors like Blossom, Zinnia, Grasshoper, Bubble, Sweet, Butternut, Lovelace and Oops.
