Cloth Diaper Creams

Diaper cream — our favorite topic. In fact, it seems to be everyone’s favorite topic when it comes to cloth diapers. A LOT of parents often wonder if cloth diaper cream is okay to use with cloth diapers and the answer is yes, but under a few conditions.cotton-babies-cover-june-2011

You see, with bumGeniusFlip and Econobum cloth diapers, you can’t just lather your baby’s bum in a cream and place a cover over it. This will void your warranty, as it can cause a whole mess of issues such as leaks, odors, and unnecessary wear and tear. Creams and lotion are designed to coat your baby’s bottom and repel moisture. These products will cling to the inner fabric of your cloth diapers the same way they cling to your baby’s bottom.

As much as we’d like to prevent diaper rash from terrorizing you and your baby, we can’t. But if your little one does experience a rash, keep these tips in mind when using a cream, lotion or oil with cloth diapers.

  • Use a fabric barrier to protect your cloth diapers. Try bumGenius Stay-Dry Liners or Bummis Fleece Liners.  Be sure to wash the liners separately from your cloth diaper laundry to avoid contamination.
  • Try cutting up an old cotton flannel shirt or T-shirt to use as a liner in your cloth diaper.
  •  Keep a Flip diaper cover and pack of Flip disposable inserts in your stash for a convenient diaper cream solution that won’t add extra work to your laundry routine.
  • If your pediatrician recommends using a diaper cream and you are looking for a product with natural ingredients, try Angel Baby Bottom Balm.

So what happens if I get cream on my cloth diapers? Don’t fret too much. Just scrub the affected area to remove all of the cream.

Remember, always consult your pediatrician for further assistance if your baby has a reoccurring rash. Rash creams containing fish oils will make cloth diapers smell like fish and should be avoided.
