Cloth 201: Diaper Creams
June 11, 2012 11:10 am | by

One of the benefits of cloth diapering is that many parents discover they have less diaper rash once they switch to cloth. But sometimes life happens, be it a virus, food sensitivity, a detergent sensitivity, or an unfortunate poopy diaper that stays on too long.

We get quite a few calls about how to safely use a diaper cream with your favorite Elemental JoybumGenius, Flip and Econobum products.

Diaper rash creams are generally safe to use with cloth diapers when used in appropriate amounts. Follow the directions on the container for best results.

When using a diaper rash cream that contains minerals (like zinc oxcide for example), the cream may leave a stain in the diaper. To avoid staining, use a diaper liner between your baby’s bottom and the diaper.

Here are a few anecdotal tips and tricks from the Cotton Babies’ staff:

If your baby has stubborn or reoccuring diaper rash, you should consult your pediatrician for further assistance.

If we can assist with any laundry or other questions regarding the safe use of skin care products with your cloth diapers, please give us a call at 1-314-892-1855, e-mail us or live chat at Cottonbabies.com. We are always glad to answer any questions you may have.

I recently used Bum Genius Stay Dry Liners with Destin diaper rash cream and the Destin didn’t come out of the Liners with washing. I can see how this can ruin the diaper… any tips for washing the cream out of the liner???

I got rash cream on one of my BG 4.0s and I just washed it by hand. It was a pee diaper, so it was okay. I used a little CD detergent and scrubbed. Then I rinsed. Then hand washed it again with Dawn dish soap to get the oil out. I found it easy to wash that one by hand then to have build up in my whole stash over time. It would be hard to know which ones have build up. Hope that helps.

would be great if the cream stayed put after putting it on, but with an extremely wriggly toddler, it ends up everywhere I don’t want it to. Having said that, I have never experienced a problem with leakage (other than from over saturation) and have also always put them in the same wash with no problems.

GroVia makes a nice diaper cream as well. I know they’re a competitor, but it’s very portable since it’s a stick which makes it nice for daycare.

Also, can you just wash the liners with the rest of the baby laundry or does it need to be washed more vigorously?

We recommend washing the liners separately to avoid transferring cream, lotion, etc. on the diapers during the wash cycle.

Can you also use the Flip inserts in other BG diapers such as the 4.0s?

Flip inserts have suedecloth on the top. Using them inside a pocket with two layers of suedecloth touching can lead to leaks. We don’t really recommend it, but if you are in a pinch, it could work if you used the Flip insert upside down (with the microfiber pointing up and the suedecloth pointing down inside the pocket).
