Cloth 201: What is a Stay Dry Liner?

We are often asked to clarify the differences between these three cloth diaper accessories: diaper doublers, stay dry liners and stay dry doublers.
These are the smaller insert that comes with your bumGenius Original Pocket Diapers. This smaller insert is less absorbent than a standard bumGenius insert, but is ideal for newborns because it creates a trimmer fit for those early days. Once your little one needs the standard insert, these are great to add to your pockets for nap-time or overnight when extra absorbency is needed.
Keep in mind, these are only recommended for use inside a pocket diaper.
These are a thin fleece liner with no absorbency. These are great for wicking moisture away from your little one’s bottom if you are using a natural fiber, like cotton prefolds or bumGenius Elementals. They are especially helpful to keep moisture away from tender skin during nap-times and overnights for those who love cotton or hemp inserts. These are also useful if you have to use a diaper cream to protect your cloth diapers, as mentioned in our previous post.
Keep in mind, diaper liners are not intended to absorb moisture. They are used on top of an absorbent insert to wick moisture away from baby skin.
These doublers are the best of the two previous products rolled into one. They are the same size as the diaper doubler/newborn insert. They have a stay dry layer on one side and have some microfiber for absorbency. These are another great option if you use cotton prefolds or Flip organic inserts for overnight.
Keep in mind, these doublers have a stay dry layer. They do not work well inside a pocket style diaper. They are best used directly against baby’s skin with another absorbent insert underneath.

so the flip newborn staydry insert has two layers of microfiber terry and 1 layer of suedecloth and the bumgenius staydry doubler has two layers of microfiber terry and 1 layer of microfleece. but besides the two different staydry material, what makes them different in size, absorbancy, staydry-ness, durability, etc….?
I use the bumgenius 3.0 and add a hemp babies insert for overnight. Have not had a leak and my little one sleeps 10-11 hrs and is a heavy wetter.
i have the bum genius 4.0 and flips and i cannot put them on my 16 month old at night due to leaks. any recommendations on how to prevent leaks at night? I have used the doublers, but they even begin to leak during the day.
Hi Lizzy and Rebecca, Flip Stay Dry inserts are a different product that are actually a different size and shape. Flip Stay Dry inserts are similar in size to the bumGenius One-Size insert, but have a stay dry layer on one side that is safe to put next to baby’s bottom. The bumGenius One-Size inserts are all microfiber, so we do not recommend putting these directly against baby’s skin as microfiber can irritate sensitive skin. Hi, Heather, are Flip stay-dry inserts different than these three options? If it’s the same as one of these, which one? I use both Flip and bumGenius 4.0 for my baby, and sometimes I try a variety of combinations (including pre-folds) to double at night. Thanks!
For a bumGenius 4.0 a stay dry liner is probably best.
If using bumGenius 4.0, which is better to use a stay dry liner or stay dry doubler?
