There is so much to learn when it comes to using cloth diapers.  You have to become familiar with the different diapers and inserts, find the right technique that will keep your little one dry, and nail down the perfect wash routine.  All of which is simple to do. Many families wonder what to do if your water is hard.

So what is hard water? 

Hard water has high mineral content.  More than 85 percent of the country has hard water.  The mineral content in the water varies region-to-region and water source.

Why does hard water cause problems with cloth diapers?

Having hard water can lead to soaps and detergents not working well. Because diapers are not clean, they might have odor issues.  Dishes may look dull from the residue. You might also notice that your shampoo and soaps don’t lather like they should.

How do I determine my water type? 

Here’s a general breakdown:

• 0-60 mg /L = Soft water
• 61-120 mg /L = Moderately hard water
• 121-180 mg /L = Hard Water
• 181+ = Extremely hard water

Some people decide to buy tests to check the mineral content of their water. Those tests are often readily available at your local hardware store.

Hard water maps will also tell you if the H2O in your area is high in minerals.  You can also call your local water utility company or visit its website to be sure.

What do I do if I have hard water?

First, it’s not a big deal to have moderately hard water.  Detergent companies make detergents that need to work well in hard water because so much of the United States has this issue. If your diapers don’t seem to be getting clean, slightly increase the amount of detergent that you’re using in both wash loads (remember, cloth diapers should be washed twice with detergent in both wash cycle).  If that doesn’t work, give us a call and we’ll be glad to help you troubleshoot the problem.
