Cloth Diapers

Cloth Diaper Basics: Taking Cloth Diapers on the Road
September 15, 2013 8:19 pm | by

I took a three-day trip this weekend, which was much needed and very enjoyable. People go on vacation all the time, but there is a huge difference between my trip and other people who travel: I don’t have kids. Traveling with kids can seem like a huge task in itself, but traveling with kids who wear cloth diapers may be an even bigger one. Now, even though I don’t have children, I do know a thing or two about cloth diapers. I also know a few things about traveling with cloth diapers. If you’re planning on taking a trip or

Cloth 201: High Efficiency Wash Machines
September 8, 2013 3:50 pm | by

Washing cloth diapers in a high efficiency wash machine shouldn’t be any different than washing cloth diapers in a top loader or laundromat. Sometimes, however, it is different because HE wash machines use as little water and energy as possible to clean your laundry. This can be good and bad. When washing dirty cloth diapers, it is extremely important to be sure that your bumGenius, Flip and Econobum covers are getting cleaned enough. If not, your cloth diapers may start to stink due to detergent build up and left over messes, which could irritate your baby’s sensitive skin. Finding the

Love My Cloth Diapers
September 1, 2013 1:46 pm | by

Did you see our announcement on Facebook last week? We are looking for a bunch of  lifestyle shots of babies wearing bumGenius, Flip Diapers, and Econobum products for a project we are working on this fall. If you have a photo that you took of your baby that you’d like us to consider for this, please post it to our wall, leave it in the comments section below, or email it to media@cottonbabies.com. Be sure to Include a quote about why you love the diaper your baby is wearing. If you are a Twitter or Instagram person, post the shot

Cloth Diaper Creams

Life is hectic, and if you’re human, you might forget something every once in a while or get distracted easily.  This happens to me often. I’m pretty sure my mind blanks numerous times throughout any given day. When you’re a mom and spend 99.9 percent of your day worrying about taking care of your family, you probably lose track of things, too. Even cloth diapers. After you ran errands this morning with your baby, did you remember to bring in your bumGenius Wetbag, or is it still outside in the car? If  you forgot to grab it, run outside now!

Cloth Diaper Basics: Cloth Diaper Styles
August 4, 2013 9:34 am | by

Like shoes and cars, there are quite a few styles of cloth diapers. When I started learning about cloth diapers, I was pretty confused about the styles. I didn’t know the difference between a pocket style diaper and an All-in-One, let alone a hybrid system or fitteds. Then, after working at Cotton Babies for a few months, I started to get the hang of it. Again, like a pair of shoes or a car, there are hundreds of styles and versions of cloth diapers, so we won’t cover every  single type in existence. But if you are trying to get the

Cloth Diaper Creams

According to most pediatricians, diaper rash is pretty easy to treat. All you need are over-the-counter or prescription topical diaper creams. Apply them to your baby’s bum for a few days and the redness will go away. Easy, right? Your pediatrician may not consider the fact that you use cloth diapers and they told you just to apply the cream directly to your little one’s bottom, but hold out! We have a few suggestions to keep in mind when using a diaper cream, lotion, or oil to treat a rash when using cloth diapers. Always use a fabric barrier to protect your cloth diapers.  Creams and lotion

Prepping Cloth Diapers

Cloth diaper terminology is a foreign language. And, if you haven’t done your homework, learning the lingo may seem well, … exactly like a foreign language. Speaking, reading and understanding cloth diaper terms gets easier. It just takes a bit of studying, but with hard work and dedication, you will quickly pick up on cloth diaper vocab. For those of you who want to become fluent in cloth diaper, we have a cheat sheet for you! Below is a list of some of the most popular cloth diaper terms. Cloth Diaper Basics: Can I use bleach?
July 8, 2013 8:44 am | by

One of the biggest misconceptions about cloth diapers is that you can’t wash your stash with bleach.  We’re here to set the record straight and tell you that you can!  In fact, we even recommend washing your bumGenius, Flip, and Econobum cloth diapers with it.  But don’t go overboard with the bleach!  We have a few tips to follow when using it. We suggest adding 1/4 cup of regular liquid chlorine bleach to your warm wash cycle once a month.  There are several reasons why you will want to do this, like cloth diaper stink, ammonia, detergent build up, or

Prepping Cloth Diapers

Ah, summer. What’s not to love about the season? School is out, vacations are planned, and the weather is nice, which can only mean one thing: air drying cloth diapers. Line drying your cloth diapers is a great way to save money, and each month, it can put more than $10 back in your pocket. But not only that, drying your diapers in the sun can also remove stains and sanitize your stash. To dry your cloth diapers outside, you don’t need a traditional clothesline and clothespins. You can use a folding drying rack or set your diapers over a

Cloth 101: Snaps vs. Hook & Loop
June 10, 2013 12:14 pm | by

This post is somewhat of a conversion story. When I first started cloth diapering, I was hook and loop all the way, baby! I’d never diapered a baby before, and hook and loop mimics the ease of disposables. You just pull the tabs tight and let go. What could be easier? My entire stash consisted of BumGenius 3.0 (now 4.0‘s) and AIO Organic (now Elementals) hook and loop diapers. A big advantage of hook and loop is the smaller learning curve for other caregivers. We had a nanny for my son’s first year of life, and it was easy for
