When was the last time you were confronted with someone else’s need? What was your response? There will always be someone who needs aid of some kind, but it is vital that we each do our part. When we feel the little tug on our insides to step out from our comfort zone, let’s all reach out and do what we can to help. Speaking of needs, and in lieu of Diaper Need Awareness Week, we want to spotlight this prevalent issue right here in our own nation.
Diaper need is a silent epidemic in the United States. According to a recent study by Huggies, one in three families are forced to choose between household necessities and diapers. Diapers are one of the most expensive costs associated with raising a baby. There is currently no government assistance available to help families in need with the cost of diapers. Diapers cannot be purchased with WIC or SNAP benefits. However,we recognize that diapers are a basic necessity to keep our babies healthy, clean and dry. Without an adequate supply of disposable diapers, parents resort to rationing by leaving them on their little ones longer and also to drying soiled diapers in order to reuse them.
This can lead to a heartbreaking array of problems such as rash and infection for babies and significant emotional stress for parents. In response to this growing epidemic, Cotton Babies, Inc. created Share the Love, a cloth diaper bank. It has been growing since 2012 and now includes 125 locations nationwide. Share the Love brings hope to struggling families by offering reusable cloth diaper loans to qualifying families.
We are thrilled to be able to play a part in the journey to bridging the gap for those who need assistance. It is also exciting to have something in place to enable others to participate in helping bring aid to these sweet families. Due to a recent influx of cloth diaper donations, the St. Louis locations of Share the Love have over 1700 diaper changes available for distribution. These donated diapers have the potential to save local families the purchase of nearly 400,000 disposable diapers this year alone.
