Find Your Tribe: How I Joined a Mom Group

I’ve been watching a lot of “Friends” on Netflix lately. It reminds me how important it is to find that group of people that help you get through life’s ups and downs. If you’re reading this, you almost certainly know that being a parent is not easy. Stay-at-home-mom life is a blessing, but can also be very lonely at times. Of course, you have some of the sweetest and most rewarding moments you’ve ever experienced, but it can also be physically and emotionally exhausting.

What I’ve realized is that finding another group of moms (or dads!) has been just what I need to get through those difficult moments. When my oldest was about two, I joined a playgroup that was organized by our local Parents as Teachers Mom’s Club. I’m pretty outgoing, but I was a little nervous at first. Little did I know that the playgroup would continue for years, in various forms, and that some of those women would become my best friends; my very own mom group or tribe.

We had a coordinator who scheduled a biweekly playgroup. It was always on the same day of the week at the same time to make scheduling and participation easier. We took turns hosting at each other’s houses. The host was responsible for providing a small snack. You brought your own drinks. Those playgroups literally became like a therapy session for me. The kids had a great time playing while the moms caught up, let loose about their frustrations, and just had a great time being around other adults. Eventually, our playgroup turned into walking trips, playground trips, and an occasional happy hour with just the moms.

DIY Mom Group

Want something more than just a playgroup? You could start your own. Here are a few ideas on types of groups you can start. Think about how YOU would like to spend time with other moms.

Walking Group

Check out trails in your area! You can choose to make it more focused on nature, exercise, or just a fun time to get out of the house. Take the stroller and have an adventure.

Workout Group

Do you have a great basement for working out in? Invite some other moms over. Sweat it out together.

Craft Group

Getting scrappy or otherwise getting your craft on can be great for kids and adults. Setting aside some time might be a great excuse to follow through on your Pinterest board.

Game Group

Bunco, anyone? Make it just for moms or include the kids, too.

Book Club

Keep it on the cheap side and check out free online eBooks.

If you aren’t up to starting your own group, social media can be a good place to start. You may also want to check out Parents as Teachers or your local MOPs group to see if there is already an established group you’re interested in. Check out events at your local cloth diaper store. You may meet someone awesome there, too!

Also, don’t feel bad about checking into social media. If that’s what you need to get some adult interaction on a difficult day, do it. Sometimes a quick message from a good friend is just what I need to stay connected and turn my day around.

Finding that group is a great step towards knowing you’re not alone in your struggles, that you’re doing the best you can, and potentially finding some lifelong friends for you and your children. Before we moved, a member of my tribe snuck this note in my purse. May you be just as lucky in finding your own tribe to support you and lift you up when you need it.
