As I was preparing for my first airplane trip with my 2 littles, I consulted many of the moms and dads in the office for their best travel tips.
Bekah, our product designer, offered one of the best stories I can’t believe I’ve never heard: the story of how Flip diapers came to be.
I was lamenting that I planned to use disposables for a weeklong trip to Hawaii. For past vacations, we drove and had access to laundry. Since we are literally going to paradise, I am not going to spend time worrying about laundry. But, this is our first trip on a plane and I am concerned about disposable diapers leaking or having a blowout.
That’s when Bekah suggested putting a Flip diaper cover OVER the disposable diaper. Then, she offhand mentioned that’s how Flip diapers came to be. Wait, what?
One Fateful Trip Created Flip
Years ago, Jenn and Bekah were on a several weeklong trip for a trade show in Germany and visiting our old factory in Egpyt. Bekah had a nursing baby that came along for the trip. Because of the complicated travel plans, she needed to pack for herself and baby in 1 carry-on bag. That, in itself, deserves a round of applause! Because of limited space and time constraints, she needed to use disposables on the trip.
She was wearing her baby in an Ergo Baby Carrier and couldn’t risk any blowouts. A blowout while traveling would dirty another outfit and potentially soil the carrier. To prevent blowouts, she put a bumGenius Pocket Diaper shell over the disposable. The Pocket Diaper did not have an absorbent layer inside, so it was still pretty trim. On that trip, the disposable diapers allowed for TEN blowouts. Each one was contained by the Pocket Diaper over the disposable. We’re talking potential up-the-black blowouts that were contained! While traveling, she hand washed the cloth diapers that contained the blowouts. Luckily, they dried pretty quickly.
It was a stroke of genius. Bekah and Jenn knew immediately that they had to create a cloth diaper travel system. On a transatlantic flight, they began sketching out what would become the Flip Hybrid Diaper System. The Flip system is a reusable cover that can be paired with 3 different types of inserts: Stay-Dry, Organic Cotton or Disposable. The goal was to make a cover that could be reused, it would dry quickly, and most importantly, it would contain the mess. The Flip system nailed it!
Moral of the story: I need to pack a few Flip covers in my bag!
