Jenn’s Thoughts: Pooping Day?
January 6, 2011 5:14 pm
Do we have any poop experts who read this blog? If so, I need your help.
We have pooping day in our house. It’s usually a day that we pick Elsie up from the babysitter and find out that she productively filled four diapers that day. Every single child will go at least once, maybe twice, and almost always during dinner. Sometimes, Jimmy and I will have a moment of shared hilarity when the last child finally yells for help wiping their bottom. Other times, like today, it’s not so funny. I’m ready to call the pediatrician and ask her what causes pooping day to happen. We don’t feed them a diet of straight whole wheat bread, broccoli and oatmeal. My kids eat their fair share of non-fibrous, perfectly constipating junk. What in the world causes that volume of poop to happen… all at once? Is it phases of the moon? Do your kids do this?

Yesterday was a poop day, too! Though I’m just introducing solids to my 6 month old, so this is the “new normal” while his digestive system learns what it’s all about.
I was contemplating the poop a lot yesterday, as I had to put all my BG 4.0 OS diapers back to their smallest setting. I can handle the occasional pee out the top at the small size, but the poop out the legs on the medium setting was just too much!
TMI post – My sister and I married twin brothers. Strange in itself . . . The brothers (husbands) go “at least 3 times a day”.
Enter in six kids between the two families – 6 months, 9 months, 2, 3, 4, and 5. The children have all inherited this “special trait”. I cd’d all but the 5 year old (3 at the same time for over a year) and that is A LOT OF POOP.
LOL
ugh…we had a pooping day yesterday…by the end of the day I was sure there could be no more poop…so I didn’t put a liner in the diaper…and there was MUCH more…and much dunking….and then only one poop today…ah well.
Yesterday it was poop day in our house. One baby is 3 months, and toddler is 3 years old. I have 8 flip covers between the two of them, they took out 6 of them. I usually do laundry every 2 days, but yesterday was an exception. Maybe it is the moon? One is breastfed and the toddler eats pretty much the same thing every day, so who knows.
It’s probably some kind of genetic factor. My mom claimed that as a baby I would poop twice a week, in spite of being totally breastfed. Even as a child, I usually didn’t go more than a couple times a week, up through high school age. My husband still can’t believe this. My daughter goes through phases. At least one poop a day is normal, but her normal changes. As long as she isn’t constipated or doesn’t have diarrhea, I don’t worry about it. I wouldn’t rule out a phases of the moon theory either. More women go into labor during full moon. My daughter was born the day after a full moon and the maternity ward at our hospital was filled to over capacity.
Are these days on any kind of schedule? It could actually be some kind of bodily schedule regulated by hormones or other chemical levels, the way women and men both suffer from their own kind of PMS.
If my DS hasn’t pooped at least 3 times in one day, he’s constipated! Speaking of which, we only had one BM today…time to break out the bananas 🙂
Its not abnormal at all, MANY kids go several times a day. Exercise has a lot to do with it too– how much running around they’ve been doing. But any kind of change can “make things happen” so it depends greatly. Just keep a smile, and know, this too shall pass.
My daughter goes daily, my husband goes weekly it seems. I don’t understand how he can not go every day. I always thought that a daily bowel movement was healthy. I’d ask the pediatrician. I’m sure there’s nothing wrong, because I know other people who don’t go daily, but still, can’t hurt to ask. Plus it will set your mind at ease. I was also thinking, you know how women who live together will often have their menstrual cycles sync up? Maybe there is something like that going on.
strawberries and oranges trigger those kind of days for two of my kids. do you notice something different in her diet before this happens?
You mean six times a day every day is too much!! HA HA chalk it up to good parenting and healthy diets. I would rather be fighting the flowing poop than a constipated baby! 😉
My LO goes every day after breakfast then sometimes more throughout the day. Things get all backed up and volume increases when things change, we drive to visit family, teething, a big meal of a favorite food, change in sleep pattern… Maybe if you make a little mark on a calender of it like a star or something a pattern will emerge especially if you also jot alot of their activities down. Just a thought.
My 1.5 year old didn’t go all Christmas weekend while we were traveling. Then when we got home, like six times per day for three days, rather than a normal two or three. I think its a comfort factor, too! He isn’t as relaxed as at home!
It can be something as innocent as a little too much olive oil on their food, what set my daughter off was if anyone let her have two bananas, which was an easy thing to do as she loves bananas. My son only poops twice if he’s constipated, once the first one is out he lets rip!
I have only one of my own, but I babysit two other toddlers and this happens to us too. Despite being together only part-time, and having varied diets in different homes, there are days that all three of them synchronize and I find myself changing poopy diapers all day long. My personal theory is that I am so used to changing dirty diapers that it only sticks in my memory when they do something particularly spectacular!
We’re laughing here!! We had Poop Day, too! I think it IS moon phases.
Lol I just have to laugh, sorry. My dd has days where she poops a lot and then other days she only goes once and even not at all. I just figured it has to do with what she eats. It never crossed my mind to think of other factors.
Where they loose poops? I am no expert but I would guess she came into contact with something that irritated her GI system. This can happen with no other symptoms and it could have been a host of things: a mild food-born pathogen, fecal residue (gross, I know but it happens with kids), ect.
hee hee… I had to giggle just for a second.!! Ours is not QUITE so widespread.. but yes.. my two small ones will have that also. One day here and there they both poop WAY more than normal!!!!! It’s like there’s a dam built up somewhere in there and it lets loose for ONE day!!!! I always try to get rounded meals and the baby isn’t even eating the regular “junk” stuff that the others are… it’s just one of those fun…. rare… and kind gross things!! =) =) =) ( Just glad to hear that we aren’t the only ones!!!! ) Thanks Jenn!!
My son does this about once a week. Of course, my husband has IBS, and little man may have inherited that trait… so there’s that. But yes, poop day surprises are not fun.
Well, I am certainly no “poop” expert ;)just a momma. But I do know that it is a healthy thing to have a bowel movement after every meal. Kids/adults should really go 2-3x/day…or at the very least 1x/day. When my boys were a little younger they had days where they went 3-4x/day..especially if they’re eating more snacks, fruits, etc. As long as it’s not diarrhea. I’ve heard of so many kids dealing with constipation on a daily basis. Don’t know if this helps? Sounds like everything’s working in her little body 😉 Does she take probiotics?
