Real Dad Talk: Every Good Parent

Editor’s Note: This post was shared by Travis Fleming, a Cotton Babies dad. Travis shared this on the Cotton Babies Cloth Diaper Flash Mob Facebook group and we thought it was a good reminder to share with everyone.

Every Good ParentI kept getting this overwhelming feeling at the gym that I should encourage parents today.

I feel in today’s society social media influences us greatly. It’s such a cool tool to use however, we take picture frame shots of our life and hardly anyone sees the struggle between those shots.

My little girl Harper Rae is coming up on 8 months old this month and she is just now sleeping in her own bed. The first few months of our lives we spent 16 hours a day non stop bouncing her because she dealt with some colic. She then hit 4-5 months old and decided that the ONLY thing she wanted was to nurse continuously, including throughout the night. The last few months she has a grand time playing ( she loves her toy ducks:) and she plays her little heart out for around 3 minutes before she’s ready for dad or mom to play with her.

So, we always get the question from others ” is she a good baby?” ( I hate that question) Yes! She is a good baby as long as she was bouncing and then nursing and now as long as you are playing WITH her:) what’s my point? My point is, no matter what your situation or where you are in life and no matter what other parents are doing or what other babies are doing you are a good parent. If you are a TRYING parent you are a good parent, if you are LOVING parent, you are a good parent and even if your baby has never slept through the night or fusses way more than your friends babies you have a good baby;) every baby is a blessing from the Lord and none of them should be compared with another.

On Mother’s Day, my wife sat Harper in the bumbo and nursed her as she was doing her makeup because I played drums for our church.Yesterday, I walked down the street yelling for our dog Charlie with Harper in my arms with her pjs half on at 3pm in the afternoon. I say this to encourage you.

To every parent and mom out there that does all the unconventional things that will never make it into a baby book, I admire you and I am right there with you.

Take a deep breath in, move forward and enjoy your little blessing(s) today.

Great article! People often give themselves more of a hard time than they deserve 🙂
