Real Mom Talk: Dealing With Stress
January 13, 2015 8:49 pm | by

Screen Shot 2014-04-24 at 7.22.21 PMStress can be such a bother when you are a busy parent. Not only does it affect you as an individual, but it can have a role on your family as well. Stress can be caused by many different things and can cause a lot of trouble. Knowing how to properly deal with stress can make your life so much easier and peaceful. Here are a few things I do to deal with stress on a regular basis.

Don’t sweat the small stuff. My house being untidy stresses me out. A few months ago, I realized how much it was taking a toll not only myself, but my little guy as well. I decided it was time to do something about it — I couldn’t just let things go so my husband and I sat down a created a little weekly cleaning schedule to even out the chores on a daily basis. This made my days so much easier, and I still am able to get the necessary cleaning done. I no longer worry about picking up after my little guy,  and instead, I join in on the fun. He’s only little once. I’ll clean up his toys, finish the laundry or stuff cloth diapers laundry when he goes to bed.

Have some “me” time. This can be hard to do when you are a busy parent, but it is so important. I have a husband whose job requires him to deploy overseas and work late hours. I also live far away from immediate family and usually just have a few sitters and a great neighbor to rely on. Even if it is just a 45 minute solo grocery trip to the store, it’s a few minutes I can use to get my thoughts together and have sometime to myself. It’s amazing how refreshing I feel when I get back.

Natural Relief. I swear by essential oils and breathing techniques when I’m feeling super stressed. Lavender oil is my go-to and a few deep breaths always makes me feel less stressed. These are quick and easy things you can do to help!

Take a bath. I know going to the bathroom alone with a baby may seem uncommon, but taking a warm bath with a calming bubble bath can really help put my nerves at ease.

Ask for help. If you are feeling really overwhelmed and stressed, ask for help. Whether it’s needing your sitter to stay a few extra hours, hiring someone to clean your home, or even asking the grandparents for a little assistance here and there. As parents, we think we need to do everything, but asking for help is perfectly fine. You will be surprised as to how much stress you relieve by letting a few people step in and help you out.

Talk to someone. It can be your friend, parent, partner, or a therapist, but talking to someone lifts so much weight off of your shoulders. Tell someone what you’re stressing about, what’s currently on your mind, what’s bothering you, etc. Talking will not only make you feel better but release stress so you focus on the more important things in life.

How do you relieve stress? Any tips or tricks that you find to be helpful?
