Real Mom Talk: How Motherhood Changed Me

I had just graduated high school.  To say that we weren’t ready is kind of an understatement. But we did it and we made it.

I will never forget that moment that baby A was handed to me. She had these beautiful big eyes that just looked at me with such wonder. That moment, I became a mother. I was responsible for another person’s life. It was up to me to feed her, clothe her, and keep her safe. Motherhood made me more responsible. As a teenager, I was hanging out with my friends, involved in extracurricular activities and spending my money on going out to eat or a new pair of jeans. Now my nights consisted of breastfeeding, sleep deprivation, baby fluids everywhere, and money towards diapers, wipes, and small clothes.

I would say that motherhood changed me in a positive way. I became more patient not only with my daughter but with life in general. Time management was now a must and I had to learn how to manage time with a baby very quickly! (I still can’t say that I’m always on time, but better late than never!) As a young mom, I didn’t just get thrown into motherhood, but I was also thrown into being someone’s wife. I had to learn how to budget money and make sure bills got paid on time.

Many people my age are bar hoping, dating, maybe getting engaged, and living college life. My ideal night is putting the kids to bed on time and playing a game of Monopoly with my husband. My Saturday nights don’t consist of meeting my girlfriends for dinner and drinks but popcorn and Disney movies with my little family. My priorities are much different as a mother than they were before.

Motherhood has taken me for a spin but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Some days are tough but I usually grab a cup of coffee or tea and just take a minute and reflect on how different my life would be without my girls. We wouldn’t be painting our toe nails together or cuddling up to watch Cinderella. I think at any age that you have a child, your life takes a turn and things change.

Being a mother means you always have someone to worry about, a mess to clean, meals to be cooked, laundry to be done, something to be found, and to be a shoulder to cry on. Being a mother means giving up those late night parties for a late night feeding. Motherhood is not easy but those that are blessed to become a mother become stronger.

“When you are a mother, you are never really alone in your thoughts. A mother always has to think twice, once for herself and once for her child.”

-Sophia Loren
