International Women’s Day
March 8, 2011 5:08 pm | by

Today, March 8, 2011 is the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day. You can read more about the history of International Women’s Day, the theme and events at the official website. The theme for 2011 is “Equal access to education, training and science and technology: Pathway to decent work for women”.

If you hadn’t already noticed, the natural parenting and cloth diapering communities are filled with amazing women that work hard to improve the lives of their own family, as well as families around them. These women invent products to fill a need and then ensure the products are created in a environmentally friendly and ethical way. What is interesting about many of these entrepeneurs is that if you ask, they often say they were inspired by women around them: their mothers, aunts and friends.

Arianna Huffington, co-founder and editor-in-chief of the Huffington Post, published a beautiful article today about her mother, “the woman who had the greatest impact on my life”. Ms. Huffington shares advice and stories from her mother, including a story about when her mother was working with the Red Cross in Greece. It reminded me that, as women, much of our “work” isn’t always a traditional, or even paid, job.

Many great women put forth great effort in organizations that improve the lives of others, regardless of whether they are paid staff or volunteers. We, as women, inherently understand that payoff isn’t always financial or personal gain. Many of us long to leave the world a better place for future generations. The women who marched, rallied and pushed governments 100 years ago set the foundation for the liberties we have today. Today, there remain many areas, both in the U.S. and internationally, where women need significant change to improve their lives.

To celebrate International Women’s Day, please tell us what organizations you support that work to improve lives of women. Share with us why this organization is significant to you. Let’s celebrate together how far we’ve come and how, together, we can impact future generations.

The United Methodist Women – working to improve the lives of women and children. I just got back from working at the mission today and it’s great to see a well stocked baby room where mothers can go to get diapers, formula, and clothing. It’s important for women, no matter their situation, to have access to things they need for their baby.

Being able to help struggling women the opportunity to have something for their baby always touches me at the mission.
