Real Mom Talk: Postpartum Tips
August 19, 2014 6:58 pm | by

Looking back now, there are a few things I wish I could go back and tell my postpartum self…

Soak up the moment – Of course I remember my birthing experience, but it happened so fast that some of it is a blur to me. I wish I would have taken more pictures of my little guy in the hospital and I regret not getting a picture of the 3 of us when we were in the hospital. If I had to go back and do it again I would of hired a birth photographer. They are well worth the investment.

Seek help with nursing – After leaving the hospital I was nervous to contact my lactation nurse when I needed things. Instead I would just google the info and that quickly became a nightmare. I ended up contacting my lactation nurse and she was kind enough to come to our home for a visit and answered all of my new mama questions.

Stock up on postpartum products – These will help. TRUST ME. The aden + anais adult dream blanket, Belly Bandit and Happy Mama Spray are your friends.

Let your significant other know when you need help – If you need things or help, let your partner know. I felt like I needed to do everything and it resulted in me being somewhat exhausted at the end of the day. My husband was more than happy to help out with errand running, cleaning, diaper changing etc. Remember, they are there for you. 10174954_10152800334004816_1685187028288514322_n

Give your body time – It took nine months for your body to change and it may take longer for you to get back to your old self and that it perfectly fine! I remember worrying so much about my body after a lady in the store asked me how far along I was after I had given birth. Looking back now I wish I would have just relaxed and not have been so worried about heading back to the gym.

Buy a stock pile of padsnursing pads, and lanolin cream – These are a necessity after birth. I should have bought more than what I did. Sending my husband to the store to purchase more last just a few days after we came home from the hospital was a confusing nightmare for him. I think he purchased every type of lanolin cream the local drugstore had to offer.

Relax -Remember that this is a learning experience for all of us. Everyone’s postpartum experience will be different. Remember that you are doing an amazing job… Take it easy on yourself and remember these helpful tips!
