Real Mom Talk: Potty Training Your Toddler

She is exhibiting all the signs of readiness: she wakes up dry after nap and in the mornings, tells you before or after she goes, loves to exhibit independence, shows interest when YOU have to go (that’s always fun), and hates having a dirty diaper. There are probably more signs but I feel these are the most obvious. So whether your child is 18 months or almost 4, if he or she is exhibiting some of this behavior, you may want to give it a try!

I’ll admit that I’ve been lucky in the potty-training department. We potty-trained my oldest when he was almost 2 ½. He was exhibiting signs of readiness right when his baby sister was born so we held off for a few months, knowing he was already going through a big life change. Then one weekend, Memorial Day weekend, we ran out of diapers. So we just decided to go cold-turkey. We spent the entire weekend with him in a T-shirt and Sesame Street underwear, with towels laid out on every possible surface. We asked him every 30 minutes or so if he had to go, and after just a few accidents he really got the hang of it. By the time the weekend was over, he was a pro! Hooray! My daughter was also really easy. She woke up on Easter morning, looked at me, and said emphatically, “I want to wear panties today.” Hilarious, right? I was so nervous she’d pee in her pants the second I put on her adorable ruffly pink Easter dress. But she was a champ! I think she had one small accident later that day, and that was the end of diapers for her!

And now, my toddler son is showing signs that he is ready. He tries to take off his wet diapers and tells us every time he goes poop. He asks to pee on the potty before getting in the bath, and shows interest when he catches one of us in the bathroom. (OK, he points and laughs hysterically, but that’s kind of the same thing, right?) So this time around I feel like it’ll be a smooth process just as the other kids were.

So arm yourself with a potty seat or two, grab some Flip Trainers or other cute training pants, and seize the day, sister! Sure, it’ll be sad when you’re no longer putting those cute cloth diapers on them anymore. But maybe there’s still some life left in those diapers for your next child. You can pay it forward by giving them to another mama who wants to try cloth, or even donate them to Share the Love! Good luck and godspeed. This is one milestone that’s NOT bittersweet, in my opinion!
