! As a cloth diapering mama, the thought of having to switch to disposables just for swim diapers grated against my conscience. But never fear, you don’t have to change your reusable diapering habits just because the weather is warm and you want your baby to stay cool in the pool! Here are my two favorite ways to cloth diaper for swimming season.
Cloth swim diapers. The Imse Vimse brand cloth swim diaper is not only reliable, but also comes with the option of buying a matching tankini top for little girls. It works just like a disposable swim diaper in that it’s absorbency is minimal but the leg gussets are very well-fitting to keep the solids out of the pool. Another similar suit is available from iPlay. Bonus: The cloth swim diaper with rash guard suit reduces the amount of sunscreen you’ll have to slather on your little one!
Swimsuits with built in swim diapers. There are a few options at the Cotton Babies online store for boys and for girls. They are not only functional, but adorable too!
Reuse old cloth diaper shells. Since I’ve been cloth diapering babies for 3+ years consecutively and simultaneously, I have a few diapers whose PUL is at the end of it’s life. Because the PUL is damaged, they’re not eligible for the Growing Up In Cloth buy-back program. But if the leg elastic is still secure (or if you can replace it, which is super easy!), you can still use those cloth diaper shells without inserts as swim diapers! I’ve used BumGenius 4.0’s for this purpose, and their predecessors, the 3.0’s as well. Any pocket diaper without the insert or cover will work! However, I would not recommend using the Freetime or other AIO diaper for a swim diaper because the absorbent layer can become saturated and weigh your child down in an uncomfortable way, stretching the leg elastic and allowing solids to escape into the water.
Summer is the time to make things easy, and cloth diapering for the pool can be fun, easy and cute!
