My sweet baby boy is nearly a week old, and I can’t get enough of this newborn stage. There’s just something extra sweet about having a tiny little human around who just made their debut on this planet. Since this is my third baby, I know all too well that the days seem long, but the months are short. This phase of his life is just going to fly by so I’m taking in all my favorite things about having a newborn while I still can.

My favorite part of the newborn phase is cuddles. There is no better feeling than having an itty bitty baby on your chest and watching them sleep. Plus, they’re close enough to kiss on the head and take in their sweet (and intoxicating) newborn smell. It’s just so wonderful.

As frustrating as it can be at times, I’m also really enjoying the start of our breastfeeding relationship. He’s still getting the hang of it and I’m re-learning how to nurse a newborn again, but I know it will be so special when it all comes together. There are very few nursing sessions that we get perfect from beginning to end, but when we do, it’s magical. I love looking into his little eyes when he’s still awake and watching him rest his tiny hand on my breast. He feels safe in that spot and I love that I provide comfort for him.

This is the first baby I’ve started babywearing from the beginning. We have a stretchy wrap and I’ve used it a few times during these first few days. He doesn’t really fight getting in it. And, once he’s in, he snuggles up and falls asleep. I like it because I can keep him close while I’m trying to give attention to my other children. It’s the best feeling to be able to have him close all day and not feel like I need to put him down. I want to know that I spent as much time with him during this phase since I know it won’t last long.

I really love just staring at him. I can’t tell you how many times I just find myself looking at all the little wrinkles on his head, the creases of his ears, the little nails on his fingers, and just inspecting his features from head to toe. He’s a tiny guy, just over 6 lbs. I can guarantee that in just a few weeks, he’ll be much bigger and therefore look a little different. Right now, I’m just getting to know him and evidently staring him down is one of the ways I do it!

The little noises he makes just tug at my heartstrings. He coos, he snores, and he has the saddest little whimper. Mama can’t stand to hear him cry, and that’s very difficult since he hates diaper changes! It’s just another thing that I’m taking in with some mental snapshots. I’m sure I won’t find all of his noises adorable within no time at all! 😉
