I’m going to be honest: I wasn’t planning to use cloth diapers on my newborn. I wanted to use disposables during the first few weeks because it can be stressful bringing a new baby home and getting everything — and everyone — acclimated. With two kids, I rarely got a moment to myself, and now that I have three, spare time is pretty much non-existent. Needless to say, after two weeks of using disposables with my newborn, I was done. I needed a new solution because I couldn’t keep running to the store multiple times a week to get more diapers. It was just too much. That’s why we wanted to try Econobum Newborn Covers.
My son was 6 pounds when he was born, so basically, he was a little peanut. He had a tiny waist, skinny little thighs, and could not fit into one-size cloth diapers. To be expected, of course. I started with three Econobum Newborn Covers, which was enough to last us until my son was six weeks old. I paired these covers with extra small prefolds and a Snappi, and was able to get a trim fit with this combo. These diapers also fit low, below the navel to keep the umbilical area dry, so I knew my baby was comfortable.
Overall, I really enjoyed using these diapers. I would definitely recommend them to friends and family who want to cloth diaper their newborn because this is one of the most affordable ways to do it. I would also recommend having a bigger “one-size” stash so they could use cloth after their baby outgrows the newborn diapers!
Econobum Newborn Covers Features:

I’m so glad you wrote this post! We love our OS econobum covers, and I think they don’t get enough attention because they’re not as cute as many of the other covers out there. Even I only tried them as a last resort. They’re one of only two covers that don’t leave nasty red marks on my daughter’s lusciously chubby thighs, without having to be so loose that they leak (which in the end became my only criteria for a cover).
I do wish they came in colors or prints, not just white with trim (and I would totally pay more for that option!), but that’s just because I love converting people to cloth by showing off an adorably fluffy bum, and econobums just don’t get that job done as well. However since they’re intended to be a basic, no frills diaper that anyone can afford, you can’t really hold that against them. They serve their intended purpose wonderfully! (Plus I always have my BG pockets to draw in the newbies! Over the past 7 months we’ve gotten our pediatrician more and more interested, and at our last visit she asked me where she could buy some! Score one for cloth!)
