Storing Cloth Diapers for the Next Baby

Prepping Cloth Diapers

Cloth diapers are meant to be reused.  And depending on the condition of your stash and the overall wear and tear, you may be able cloth diaper future children with your existing bumGenius, Flip, and Econobum products, which increases your savings and helps you get the most out of your investment. We have put together some helpful tips for storing cloth diapers for the next baby.

Unlike other household items, cloth diapers should not be tossed into a box and dumped in a closet or basement for a few months — or years. So if you’re planning to use your cloth diapers on another baby or just need to free up some drawer space for a short period of time, follow these tips to ensure that you’re storing your stash properly.

Steps to storing cloth diapers for the next baby

1. Rinse out your diapers.  Before you tuck away your beloved stash, rinse your cloth diapers thoroughly in hot water.  Do not use any additives.  This will ensure that you remove any residue from your diapers.  You may also want to sanitize your diapers by sunning.

2. Make sure your diapers are dry.  You do not want to store wet or damp diapers.  This is how mold, mildew, and other bacteria grows.

3. Place your diapers in an area that doesn’t fluctuate temperatures.  House your diapers in a place that circulates air and does not experience dramatic temperature changes.  Never keep your diapers in a moist garage or basement, storage shed, or closet.  You should also try to keep your cloth diapers out of the sun.  Exposure to direct sunlight, especially if you use a clear storage tote, could cause the color could fade.

Cloth diapers have a long lifespan, when properly cared for.  When taking your diapers out of storage, always wash your stash.  If you find that your diapers need a bit of TLC, check out the bumGenius Refresher Kits.

And who knows, with exclusive, limited-run diapers like the new Genius and Artist Series prints, your stash could even be worth some money once you unpack it.

This is a really good post. I am so happy that a friend of mine passed down 20 bumGenius pocket diapers when I told her I was expecting. She had them in a storage unit for about 2 years. The diapers still work well for the most part, but I had to replace all the elastic because it had broken down from exposure to extreme temps. I also experience leaks through the PUL even though I’ve stripped them multiple times. I know that these problems are due to the way they were stored. All in all, they are still really good diapers… I just don’t use them for outings or for overnights. And when I’m done with them, they’ll be passed along again!
