My advice to any new mom…or even a not so new mom… I’ve been there- a new mom- 6 times. (Yes- SIX!) Just when you think you have this new mom thing figured out they throw you a new curveball. Maybe your last baby never slept, and the new one is a great sleeper. Maybe you weren’t able to nurse last time and this time you are trying it. The thing is- every baby is different. They have different needs and sensitivities. And as soon as you think you get this baby thing figured out, everything changes, again, it seems.

Bringing home a new baby from the hospital can feel overwhelming. You have all the right baby stuff, but now you need to figure out the actually-raising-a-baby thing. I feel like I was better prepared than most first-time moms as the oldest of 8 children. I wasn’t new to babies but I was new to this baby. Yet even still I remember when the midwives left thinking to myself, “They left me with this entire human being. Shouldn’t there be a test for this?” Settling into the new routine of parenthood can be a tough transition, I’ve been through it five
When I became pregnant with my first baby, I thought I had everything planned out. I wanted to cloth diaper, wear my baby and breastfeed for at least the first six months. I hadn’t been around breastfeeding mothers before I had my daughter, but I figured it would be easy. After all, it was natural, right? Little did I realize… babies don’t necessarily follow your plans and unfortunately, breastfeeding my baby wasn’t going to be as easy as I expected. With my girls, I had some difficulties. I dealt with cracked nipples, low supply, and a baby with horrible reflux. Our breastfeeding relationships lasted a
It was 5:00 am on Christmas morning. My husband was sleeping, blissfully unaware of the anxiety I was feeling as I laid awake next to him. I had just taken a pregnancy test and it was positive. No, this was not my first pregnancy test rodeo, but seeing that little blue line caused an old, familiar, mild panic to rise up in my body. Reality started sinking in; I was about to experience my fourth pregnancy. The evening before, Christmas Eve, is when 2 of my siblings joyously announced their pregnancies to our family. Which caused me to pause, re-count
When I started working at Cotton Babies, I knew absolutely nothing about cloth diapers, babywearing… really, anything about babies. But it sure didn’t take me long to learn! In no time, I memorized the names and colors of every cloth diaper we sold and became increasingly excited to one day cloth diaper my own baby. The interest in babywearing followed soon after. I’d watch and chat with ladies around the office wearing their babies (yes, we bring our babies to work), I’d research the carriers we sold, I’d scroll through the Flash Mob and see photos of all the different carriers
Oh, how amazing it is to bring life into this world! Mothers should be worshiped and revered for the ultra-feminine and powerful babes that we are. After all, we are the reason humanity has continued to exist! What a blessing to be part of such a beautiful and mysterious gift. For you lovely ladies who are holding a positive pregnancy test for the first time, here’s some information that perhaps no veteran mommy has shared with you — because if you knew these things beforehand, you might never partake in the divine gift of childbearing. Consider yourself warned, because it’s
Caring for a baby is something you don’t really know.. until you KNOW. Everyone sure has a lot of advice to share when they see your growing baby belly. Take some of it with a grain of salt, or heck — dismiss it all! With that being said, here’s what I’ve learned in my brief 8 months of parenting. For context, I’m a neurotic non-perfectionist and this list refers only to BABIES (really just my baby) and not CHILDREN. I don’t know a thing about children yet. Figure out the pump ahead of time.
