The Flip One-Size Cloth Diaper System
October 21, 2009 7:15 pm | by

Elsie wasn’t feeling very well today, but she had a few minutes where she was a little more chipper so we went outside and snapped a few photos of her wearing her Flip One-Size Cloth Diapers. In the photo above, she is still wearing her overnight diaper. It was stuffed with a Flip: Stay Dry Insert and a Flip: Disposable Insert.
Elsie is learning to crawl… she was kind enough to start exploring a crack in the concrete so I could take this shot of her little bottom showing off the design of Flip’s leg casings.
We worked with several materials until we could be sure that the Flip leg casings would provide a good seal (keeping everything inside) while still being easy on your baby’s leg. We settled on a soft, flexible knit fabric. Elsie has been wearing Flip most of the time lately and I’ve been really pleased with the results. The leg casings do their job while still being gentle.

We have long known that we needed a diaper cover, but have gone back and forth over
what we thought was most important in a diaper cover.
Our first few prototypes looked a lot like bumGenius and didn’t have a wipeable inside. We nearly went to production with that design, but I called a halt to it before we went too far. When Andrew was little, we used diaper covers and prefolds. We lived in an apartment and I was hand-washing all of my diaper covers every night. We used certain diaper covers over and over again because they could be wiped out. Hand washing was hard enough… it was so helpful when I could just wipe out the inside and reuse the cover. So, relying on my spidey senses, we went back to the drawing board to design a wipeable cover and, months later, emerged with what you see here. The inside has optional flaps… use them or don’t. I use them all the time because it keeps the insert inside the diaper and the top edge of the diaper covered with waterproof material (no wicking) front and back. I love it. I can wipe out the cover (if needed), lay in the next insert and keep going…

So let’s talk Flip inserts. Flip is available with a Flip: Stay Dry option, a Flip: Organic cotton option and a Flip: Disposable option.
Flip: Stay Dry inserts are made of three layers of microfiber and one layer of suedecloth. Fold lines have been sewn on one end so the insert naturally folds to the right size when you’re putting it in the cover. We eliminated the extra step of snapping the insert so you could do this one-handed. The sizing is embroidered on the microfiber side so you don’t have to guess which line to use.
Flip: Organic Inserts are made of 100% GOTs-certified organic cotton.  The insert is designed to fold one direction for a large / medium setting and the other for a small setting. Before washing, it looks much larger than the cover. After washing 3-5 times in hot water with detergent (drying in the dryer between each wash), the insert will become absorbent and shrink down to its proper size.
Flip: Disposable Inserts are next… these inserts provide about the same absorbency as a size 3 or a size 4 disposable diaper. They are trim, absorbent and get the job done when life demands something disposable. I’ve used these on business trips and have used them overnight when all of our extra inserts were dirty. They work amazingly well to boost a microfiber insert for overnight (a trimmer option than double-stuffing) or by themselves overnight. You can stack, fold, layer… whatever you need to do with them. They are unbleached, dye-free, lead-free, PVC-free, phthalate-free, fragrance-free and latex-free. No plastic. No adhesives.

One last photo showing all of the inserts together… please excuse my kitchen table. 🙂
Right to left:
Flip: Organic Insert (unwashed),
Flip: Stay Dry Insert,
Flip: Disposable Insert
Flip: Diaper Cover stuffed with a washed Flip: Organic Insert. This cover was snapped down to the smallest setting.

The detergent recommendations are both for the longevity of the product and for your baby’s skin. If I had to choose between enzymes and brighteners though, I’d pick enzymes. I hope that helps!

i live abroad and want to use the flip system, i have checked at the supermarket and cant find a no enzyme, no optical brightener detergent, are there any commercial brands that carry this? are these reccomendations for absorbency purposes of the diapers or for allergic reactions on babies?? what would be worse to use, one that has enzymes but no brightener or one that has brightener but no enzymes? please help!! this is the main reason i havent bought the system yet!!

Thanks for this post, I had a lot of questions answered.
I currently am exclusively using the 3.0s…I’m thinking about getting a few flips to add to my collection after reading this post. Can I use my microfiber inserts with these? (from the 3.0s) or even a prefold?

I just decided to take the dive into cloth diapering about 2 weeks ago. After about a week of research I was still a bit confused and actually a little bit overwhelmed with all of the lingo and I went to a brick and mortar store here locally called O Baby Organics and after speaking with the store employee, decided to purchase 1 flip diaper just to give it a try. I LOVE THIS DIAPER! my baby is 2 and a 1/2 months and I am ready to swith completely!I had quiet a bit of cloth prefolds someone had given me in a diaper cake as an alternative to sposies at my baby shower and I have used these for the past week and I’m in love! I plan on buying 2-4 more day packs in both stay dry and organic! Cant wait to try out the different options of inserts! For any mommy that would like to try out cloth dipes I TOTALLY recommend the FLIP system! It is a practical system that allows for more than one diaper change unless it becomes soiled. I can definalty see how it would fit your child from newborn until potty training! I plan on having at least one more child and I wanted a diaper that had many options for use and I definatly believe I have found that in the FLIP system!

I’m new to cloth diapers and am wondering how the quality of the Flip covers compares to the bum 3.0. Is it the same fabric on the outside and same waterproof lining? I heard a few comments that they felt thinner (not accounting for the bum 3.0 lining of course). How do they compare w/ thirsties covers? I’m also trying to find a cloth solution for my 3 year old who wears a pull up at night. She’s 37 lbs and growing. I tried the bum 3.0 and organic on her and they seem to be a bit small, especially in the leg area. Any solutions?

I’m really enjoying the flip diapers, but I wandered if you have some advice on laundering them. Right now I do a cold rinse, then a warm wash/cold rinse using Charlie’s soap (from Kelly’s closet website) which was recommended for cloth diapers. Yesterday I started adding 1/4 cup vinegar to the warm wash. But they are still stinky. I’m not having any other problems, just this smell issue. Any suggestions?

I was going to ask the same question if the BG 3.0s can be used with the Flip cover. I love the BG 3.0 but my velcro is wearing out so I like the idea of the snaps on the Flip. Thanks!

Hi Jenn- just a quick question because I didn’t see the answer in this blog (unless I wasn’t looking well enough!). Right now we use BG 3.0s but i was thinking of trying the Flip. Can the inserts that come with the BG 3.0s be used with the Flip as well?

I have a 17 mos old and a 3 mos old and we are switching from sposies to cloth. We bought a few Flips and Bummis to try and instantly fell in love with the Flip. Ironically my 17 mos old and my 3 mos old were the same snap adjustment…haha…but the fabric, the sizing, the fit were all so great. No leaks from either babe what so ever and we used with prefolds or inserts. We did decided to buy all inserts for everyday use, but we have the prefolds for night time, or when ever if we want. I super love that the inside is wipeable because you hate to have to switch covers just for one little spot and they are line dry, although they dry fast, so even more important that they are wipeable. Can’t say enought about them. Would love some other prints or colors, but now that I have bought my whole stock for both babes…won;t be too sad if you wait a little bit for that 😉

    Jenn,

I am new at cloth diapering and don’t know if I should order the flip or the 3.0 bumgenius and exactly what i would need with either system to get started. I must have everything I need at once or I know I will just give up… at least I can admit it 🙂 Also should I dry pail or use a disinfectant? There are so many questions. Thank you for your response.

My Husband and I are quite torn on cloth vs. disposable. It’s mainly a cost vs. ease issue – even though I wouldn’t have to hand wash! I recently wrote a post on cloth diapers – I’d love to know what you recommend!

This is my first time CD and I after looking at all the diapers ya have I opted for the Flip. I have not tried them yet as I still have not had my baby which is due any day now. I wanted to try them first with my two yr old but he was not willing to cooperate so we’ll just have to wait and see how they will work once baby # 3 arrives. I did have a few questions though. You do not relly specify how to wash the inserts the first time before actually using them. Could you give more details. I already washed them once in hot, then dried, then washed once in cold with a double rinse, and dried again. Is that good enough so that they will be absorbent or do I still have to do more washing. Another thing, I washed the covers three times together even though I order the ribbit and the moonbeam and did not notice any bleeding so I stopped there. Do you recommend I still wash them the last three times or should I just wait and see. One last thing before I go. Could you really come out with more color options and maybe some packages in the stay dry inserts. I bought two day packs in the moonbeam and 4 singles in the ribbit along with 8 inserts just so that i could have the equivalent of 24 diapers or uses before having to wash. But with all the diapers an infant goes through I am wonderign if I will find myself washing everyday. Plus I made quite an investment with all i had to buy so please give us more options. I would really love to see these covers come in your other color options that you have for the BumGenius diapers like clementine, twilight and definetely the white. I will be on the lookout on your website to see if you do add more colors.

    P.S. Please add more colors

I’d love to see packages other than just the day pack, especially to where we could mix cover colors.

I just started using these and want to get more inserts. Any chance you’ll ever come out with some “value” packs or something? It’s a bit cost prohibitive to buy each insert one at a time. 🙁

I just bought a flip and 2 inserts at your store this weekend. I am trying to prepare them, but wondered about your pre-wash recommendations. Do I need to rinse and wash with detergent, and rinse again 6 times before using? What about the inserts? Thanks!

Do you call it the flip because you can just flip it over and put the insert in the diaper pail? Pretty neat.

Thanks for posting these pictures! I’m excited about the new lines, and the visuals definitely help me see how they could work for us. I love that they have snaps, too–after trying the bG organics with snaps and seeing how well they hold up, I think I’m completely sold on snaps. 🙂 Our first baby is nearing potty-training, I think, but fortunately we’ll have a new one coming along in a few months to get to try the new cloth diaper options. 😉

Oh, looks great. I wish I had preordered. I actually wish I could have waited — I just got new prefolds and covers three weeks or so ago, but the others were so small on Verity they were unusable. I wish I had just used sposies and waited for these.

So, a few questions — Will these be available in white and the other colors soon? If so, when? Will the shells work with prefolds? And when will you have more pics of the econobums up? Thanks so much for the pics, description and thanks in advance for responding. : )

I love that you guys are so accessible. I also like that you’re posting more often. Can’t get enough cloth, I guess. Yesterday, the flu shot nurse commented on our cute ‘diaper cover’, we were torn, did she really NOT know it was a cloth diaper, I mean after all, she had long pants on, it’s the midwest almost November. Any thoughts about a post regarding this topic. Who do you correct or tell and who do you ignore? It’s a personal choice, but I’d love some hints as to how to bring it up in conversation. I showed my mom our new zinnia colored diapers at church one day and got 2 further comments about it from other people. I never know how much to say!

Jenn- my 16 month old still has really mushy poo and has like 3 bm’s a day- I’m due to have another lo in about a month and would like a one size option but I’m afraid that poo will get all over the inside of the cover every time they poo- if I got the flip could I do an angel fold with the cotton insert to cover up the inside of the cover more? Or should I consider the econobum instead? We currently use prefolds or flats and I usually snappi so I don’t have to wash covers as often. But I would like a 1 size option to cut down on diaper bag bulk for 2 babies.

I currently use BG 3.0s, but haven’t found a good way to travel with them. Could I use the Flip disposable insert with my BG covers for travel if I lay the insert on top instead of stuffing the BG cover?
