Top 5 New Year's Resolutions for Moms in 2021. #goalgetter #onegoodmom #cottonbabies

We’re a few weeks into 2021. First, let’s celebrate we made it through the mess that was 2020! New Year’s Resolutions often get a bad reputation, but here are a few I can get behind. These resolutions are specifically created to help make myself a better mom and person.

  1. Health Resolution

I know, this is the most overdone resolution, but check in on your physical and mental health. How are you doing? I stress ate my way through 2020. My goal for 2021 is to wear a sports bra as a top to yoga class and feel confident. I’m not going to focus on meaningless numbers, but how I feel. I am LOVING the new Genius Series Sports Bras. Seriously, how can you not feel fierce wearing this?

2. Me Time

If you are an overworked parent, making some “me” time definitely falls under the health category, too. Most of us have been so busy taking care of other people, we’ve neglected ourselves. What is something you love to do?

I want to make more time for crafting. It’s my outlet and I want to pick up some skills this year. Making beautiful(ish) things makes me happy.

3. Reading More

These all kind of go hand-in-hand. Another part of “me time” is reading more and scrolling less. I want to spend less time on social media and more time reading the stack of books I have accumulated. To be honest, less social media will be good for my mental health, too. It’s easy to get sucked down rabbitholes of all the negative things going on in the world.

4. Making Greener Choices

After being home so much more this year, I am very aware of how much waste my family can generate. This spring, I’d like to install a rain barrel and start a vegetable garden. So many of my neighbors and friends made incredible gardens in 2020. After pulling the kids from school while working from home, I felt overwhelmed without taking on another project. Also, since my kids were home, we saw our water use go way up thanks to all of us being at home and the kids playing in the sprinkler, water table, baby pool and taking extra baths. A garden will have several benefits: healthy food, getting fresh air, teaching the kids about plants.

Inside, I’ve swapped out plastic bags for reusable options. I think it’s easiest to take on one room or task at a time. For example, in the kitchen, what is something you throw away? Paper towels. Great, switch out for towels and cloth napkins. Straws? Easy. Switch to silicone or metal. Plus, a lot of these swaps will save you money. Buying individually packaged applesauce is expensive and pretty wasteful. If you buy reusable pouches, buy the big jar of applesauce that costs way less.

5. Let it Go

I get overwhelmed when I see piles of laundry, dirty dishes, and toys strewn about the house while my sweet angel children are, apparently, trying to murder each other. This year, I am trying to let it go. Both figuratively and literally. By letting go of some of our stuff and clutter, I feel a sense of relief. By selling or donating things we simply don’t need to hold onto, I am making space for the things that do matter.

Pre-pandemic, my outlet was shopping. My bestie and I would hit Target after the kids went to sleep and it made my heart happy. For the past year, I’ve been staying home pretty much all the time. Yes, I’ve ordered quite a bit online, but overall, I’d say I’ve bought significantly less non-essential items. As the kids outgrow clothes, I am buying fewer pieces to replace them. It’s a good feeling. We don’t need all this stuff!

I am trying so, so hard to not let kids being kids stress me out. They are just being rambunctious, funny kids. I want to focus on being completely present with them.

Good luck in 2021! May you have a year of happiness. And remember, you can focus on making better choices any day of the year.
