Traveling with Cloth Diapers

Tips for traveling with cloth diapers

I’ve found that the longer I use cloth diapers, the more resistant I am to buying disposable diapers. Several weeks ago, my family had some traveling to do. First, we spent Labor Day weekend at my sister-in-law’s lake house. Then, we drove from the Midwest to Destin, Florida. I thought this would be a great time to use Flip disposable inserts full-time.

Traveling with little ones can be daunting, but making plans in advance helped to keep things running smoothly.

As much as I love my baby’s cloth diapers, I wanted to enjoy a carefree vacation and that didn’t involve hauling a bunch of diapers around and keeping tracking of dirty diapers. I could have easily bought some disposable diapers, but I really didn’t want to. I prefer the look of a cloth diaper and didn’t want disposables creeping into my vacation photos(signs of a diehard cloth diaper mom!). I truly am an advocate for cloth diapers and it makes me happy when strangers see them and want to learn more. Luckily, we already use Flip diaper covers, so I just needed to grab some Flip disposable inserts.

Traveling with Flip Disposables

For the long car rides, I packed a portable diaper changing station. It included a changing pad, wipes, extra Flip covers, Flip disposable inserts, diaper rash cream (just in case- though we never used it), hand sanitizer, an outing wet bag, and a roll of my dog’s poop bags. It all fit nicely in a travel cosmetics bag.

We drive a minivan, so I put the changing pad down and changed him on the floor of the van. I dropped the used inserts and wipes into the dog poop bags and tossed them in the nearest trashcan. The car ride was actually very easy.

Once we arrived, we maintained a similar setup. For the poopy diapers, we got pretty lucky and most of it stayed on the insert. For the messier ones, I let the cover soak in the toilet before making its way to the wet bag. We were fortunate that we had access to laundry on both trips.

Would I do it again?

Yes, absolutely. With the Flip disposable inserts, we experienced no leaks. I was still able to enjoy our cute prints and colors. As a bonus, we had less to bring back than we brought, so there was room for fun souvenirs. Flip covers with disposable inserts was a great way to continue using my cloth diapers even while on vacation.
