It’s Truly Genius Tuesday, and today we’re going under the sea with Marie. Marie Tharp was an American geologist and oceanographic cartographer who helped create the first and most famous scientific map of the entire ocean floor in 1977.
Map-making ran in the family
Marie was born in Michigan. Her mother was a German and Latin teacher, and her father worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture making soil classification maps. She received her bachelor’s degree in English and music and achieved two master’s degrees – one in geology and one in mathematics.
Under the Sea with Marie
Marie Tharp began her career in 1948 at Lamont Geological Laboratory. There, she met her business partner, Bruce Heezan. The two worked together over decades, and eventually created the first scientific map of the ocean floor.
At that time, women were not allowed to work on ocean vessels, so Heezan collected the data, while Tharp – using pens, ink, and rulers – systematically mapped the ocean floor back at home. She used thousands of sonar readings and literally drew the underwater details of the ocean floor, longitude degree by latitude degree. Up until that time, it was assumed that the ocean floor was muddy and flat. Tharp and Heezan discovered the world under the water with various kinds of geological features like canyons, ridges, and mountains.
Tharp used a technique called physiographic mapping, using light and texture for her diagrams instead of color. As she studied various aspects of Earth’s elements, she soon revolutionized the scientific understanding of the continental drift by revealing the presence of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.
Marie Tharp received numerous awards throughout her career. A few of the many included:
- Hubbard Award by the National Geographic Society
- Outstanding Achievement Award from the Society of Women Geographers
- Mary Sears Woman Pioneer in Oceanography Award by Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute
- 20th Century’s Outstanding Cartographers by the Library of Congress Geography and Map Division’s Phillips Society.
Marie’s work and achievements provide us with an exciting life to celebrate in the Genius Series. We love that she discovered the world below the surface of the sea.
