Β
For our Snow Day giveaway today, we want to know, what is your favorite snow or rain day activity? What activity do you love doing with your little one? Do you love to knit or read? Maybe you love making Bekah’s Peppermint Mocha. Is there a special food or drink that you must have on a rainy or snowy day? How do you make an indoors day extra special?
Β
Share your tips with us for the chance to win a free bumGenius 4.0 cloth diaper from Cotton Babies! Random winners will be drawn throughout the day from comments on this post.

Eligible entries must be posted today, Tuesday, January 11, 2011. U.S. Residents only. Void where prohibited by law. No purchase necessary to win. Winners will be notified via e-mail.

Every snow day we have grilled cheese and tomato soup for lunch…then if weather permits we go outside for snowmen and snowforts, but if its too windy we stay in and play board games and do puzzles.

Also a military family stationed in west Texas. When we used to have snow days back when we lived in Missouri we would shovel the drive way, and the porch, and the back porch (my daughter thinks its fun..lol)We would then head inside for so many games of Candyland and then tons of Disney movies!

Since we are a military family currently stationed in so cal, we haven’t had a snow day in at least 5 yrs! We just took the kids to big bear to show them snow for the first time. Watching my almost 4 yr old and almost 2 yr old see the cold white fluff for the first time was amazing! So, on our snow day we built a snow man, had snowball fights and just enjoyed the beauty of it all! They absolutely loved it….and so did we. Hopefully we can go back again, bc 1 day in the snow was definitely not enough! I love where the Marine corp brought us, but really miss the snow πŸ˜‰

Here in North Carolina, we sometimes even have preemptive snow days: The first flakes didn’t start falling until almost 3 pm, but school was out for the whole day! (Now we have a layer of ice–consummate Southern problem–and schools are closed tomorrow for the third day in a row!)

We have a tradition, which originated with Snow Breakfast, to share a meal with a family down the street whenever we have special weather. They came over for snowy Christmas dinner when our parents went home early because of dangerous driving, and we had yummy turkey-bean chili with them tonight. Yippee!

I grew up in Canada where the idea of a snow day is ludicrous. Seriously, I taught junior high, and one year the temperature was -32 degrees, plus windchill, making it way colder than anyone should be out it. School was in session, and while most parents kept their kids home voluntarily, I did have 3 students show up.
So, now that I am a SAHM and can declare any day I want a snow day, I like to knit, cuddle, watch a few cartoons with the little ones and drink tea.

We’re in a winter storm weather watch (with blizzard warning in full effect where our utilities provider has sent out a message that we should be stocked up on batteries and flashlights just in case we lose power), but do we get snow days? Nope. At least, not the grown ups!

Anyway, I’d love to win a diaper. :~) We’re getting close to full term (36 weeks today) and so far, we have 10 from friends!

Love, love, love snow days. My husband thinks I’m like a little child when it comes to a “snow day”. First, the best part is opening the window shades and peeking outside at the first sight of snow at the break of dawn. Once I get our two little ones up, ages four and two we pull open the the window blinds as wide as we can in the kitchen and eat breakfast staring in awe and wonder. That is the best part of the day..just sitting there appreciating nature’s glorious treat! Before we head outside, I make cinnamon sucanat gluten free toast in the oven so once we come back in, we can warm up the toast. Since our little ones are able to romp in the snow, we bundle up as tight as we can and play until our fingers tingle. We don’t have a fireplace, so we stand by the wood stove and hold our hands as close as we can to soak up the warmth. What a day, just as I remember as a child!

If I COULD stay home for a snow day, I’d bake something, snuggle the kiddos, and probably watch Toy Story about 3.5 times. And occassionally peek out the window to see how hubby is progressing on snow blowing. πŸ˜‰

We’ve had so many snow days this year! We’ve built forts and mixed up some snow ice cream. We’ve watched movies and snuggled in blankets to read stories. Today, we’d done all of those things by noontime, and my four year old was begging for something new… so, today’s snow activity was to make Barbie igloos. Poor Barbie was a bit chilly in her bikini. Guess making Barbie parkas will be our next snow day activity!

We also love to bake cupcakes and watch movies and take extra bubble baths. And, to wear him out, we play “No jumping on the ____” where I tell my son NOT to jump on something then he goes and jumps on it. I pretend to be horrified. He laughs. Then I tell him not to jump on something else… and he runs as fast as he can to it and jumps on it. And on and on until he tells me, “All done no jumping, mama!”

My mom has always loved the rain. When we were kids she’d gather us in the foyer of the house (we had a double door entrance like at some office buildings) and throw open the exterior door. We’d sit and watch the rain for hours. When it rains now and my mom is visiting, my kids love going out in the rain with her. They splash in puddles, run in and out of the garage, and just have fun being silly with Grandma. It is really awesome watching them form the same rainy day joy with her that I had as a kid!

We are on day 2 of snow day fun here in Kansas City! Yesterday I bundled up my 8 1/2 month old and took her outside for about 5 minutes to experience her first big snow! Her expression the entire time was one of pure curiosity! I helped her make a quick snow angel and then we went back inside and took all the layers off so she could move freely again. Since I work full-time as a teacher, we have also used this time as a bit of a nursing holiday to bump up milk supply! We also took big brother sledding and watched him have fun.

I kinda want a snow day and kinda don’t. My oldest is now in preschool so snow days means no school and that makes her sad (we didn’t have a thanksgiving party because of a snow storm). Whats funny is most days are indoor days for us since we live in the land of rain (seattle). I can’t wait for a nicer day when we can go outside and play!
When its really cold though and actually snows we like to go outside and make snow angels. We tried to convince the 3 year old to make a snow man at the last snow storm but she didn’t want to. she wanted to make a snow DORA! Sadly we never got to make it cause the snow froze and then wasn’t good for building things with. However next year we’ll be living in eastern BC in the mountains and THERE WILL BE TONS OF SNOW! I don’t know how we’ll deal. probably lots of hot chocolate, lots of indoor crafts and me learning to drive in the snow!

For me I like to embroider every day. So on snow days I like to do it too. Turn on a kids show let the kids chill out and stitch stitch stitch.

My Daughter is 21 months old and we love to paint on snowy/rainy days. We started this around 18 months and I have kept all of her ‘artwork’. We have also had fun making homemade play-dough using koolaid to color (and scent!) it. My favorite food to make for her on a rainy or snowy day is grilled cheese and tomato soup and lots of hot tea, which she loves.

I’m sure my oldest will be out in the snow in a bit and then it’s hot chocolate and toast. My one year old does not walk he scoots which is not snow friendly but he linesmen watch his sister through the glass door. When he takes his nap we’ll either play outside or play board games.

Snow Day is every day where we live (up in the hills near a mountain!)! My son who is 15 months old, has been indoors a lot this winter, so we try to find creative things to do: mommy puts feed out in the snow in front of our BIG kitchen window and the deer come, and we watch! We don’t have a television, so we read together, chase each other around the house, work on learning how to walk (which is always fun)! We also play with toys, play on mommy and daddy’s big bed, and hang out. Being snowed in is difficult (I can’t easily get into town), but has it’s pluses in that I get to hang out with my little guy all cozy warm by our woodstove!

When they come inside they want hot chocolate with 4 marshmallows. If it’s just too cold, I open the door and let it fog up and they draw on the condensation. I stay in with the little ones and have popcorn and hot cocoa ready for the older ones when they come in. It’s always nice when daddy is home to start a fire so they can warm back up in front of it before heading out again. We have 9 children, so often the younger ones can only take so long in the cold! We make our own hot chocolate mix using powdered milk, Nestle’s Quik (chocolate powder), coffee creamer, and powdered sugar. Tastes much better than the packets, and you only have to buy once (or twice) for the whole winter, and not dispose of all the tiny packets!

We usually keep the foods all warm for meals and snacks…oatmeal/muffins for breakfast, grilled cheese and soup for lunch, stew/pot pie for dinner with cookies and hot chocolate for snack. We let them play in the snow after afternoon nap, then it’s off to a warm bath before dinner. Before bed they have some warm milk and a small snack. It’s just magical waking up to a snow day!

He’s been begging for another chain since his Christmas one ran out so hopefully this will be enough motivation to go to the potty before he makes a mess!

We live in Louisiana, so the few times we get “snow” (if you call it that, it barely covers the grass) so when we see the white stuff I let the kids stay home from school until it is melt. They play outside until their hands are numb, then they head in and warm up with hot chocolate and cinnamon rolls. They head back out and do it all again. Usually around noon it is so warm that the snow is gone, so it is short lived fun.

On a snowy day, I put my 2 month old in a baby carrier, toss my husbands jacket over me and him, and head outside with big brother [who is 4 1/2]. i stand there and toss snowballs at my oldest who is all bundled up making forts, sliding around, making snow angels & eating falling snow. this only lasts about 30 minutes outside since there are zero kids around this area so my oldest son has nobody to play with besides me with a baby bundled inside my jacket. we then come inside, my oldest picks out a movie, and i whip up some hot cocoa. he loves to put mini marshmallows in, and they never seem to melt! but he still loves it. if we have candy canes laying around, we will toss one inside the cup.
on a rainy day, we just go outside and splash around. whoever gets the wettest, had the most fun in our game =] then we come inside, put on dry clothes, and snuggle under a blanket =]

We have a bird feeder hanging right outside our kitchen window on a Cottonwood tree. My husband takes a shovel full of extra bird seed and dumps it out under the feeder so all the birds gather on the ground. We like to sit by the window and watch all the birds against the white snow. It makes all their details pop out: orange beaks and little feet that look like twigs! Of course, our little one is only 13 months old and can get pretty excited looking outside. Her banging on the glass doesn’t allow for bird watching for too long lol!!

Ahhhh! I LOVE snow days, and I have since I can remember! Snuggling, listening to music, watchin’ movies, baking, arts and crafts and GOOD FOOD! I have two boys under 3, and we are home bound a LOT of the time! We always make it special, together πŸ™‚ Rather than cocoa, or tea.. My babies LOVE hot orange juice! I read about this a while ago, and how it soothes soar throats, but ALSO boots the immune system! It is actually better than hot apple cider, to us! We like to make cookies, something as easy as sugar cookies, but letting them decorate with icing and sprinkles! Our favorite “movie of the week” has been “The Land Before Time”.. We get under our warm blankies, with some snacks, and hot juice, and lay together while laughin’, cuddling, and usually turns into tickle fests πŸ™‚ There’s nothing like having the “excuse” to spend the whole day together, having fun and relaxing! Today for instance, we are making our own birdfeeders! All complete with pine cones, peanut butter, cereal, and birdseed πŸ™‚ Nothing like snuggling next to a fluffy BUMGENIUS bum πŸ™‚

I like to crochet while we watch movies. The current favorite is Finding Nemo, where my little one points out all the colors of the fish. She also has her own bit of scrap yarn with which she tries to mirror my crochet movements.

If it’s just raining and not too cold out, we’ll go play in the rain for a little bit. We tend to only go out in the snow if the wind isn’t too bad.

We actually have a Disney Family & Fun magazine “Rainy Day” activity kit. We got it from Walmart for $10. It has all kinds of small & fun activities & crafts to make.
One good thing is to put on some kids tunes & dance to them with the kids. It’s always great to bake some cookies or brownies with the kids as well. We love reading over here so snuggling together with a book is fun as well.
And of course, cloth diaper laundry! πŸ˜‰

With my twin preschoolers, we usually have a movie day (they love it!) The baby loves to stand at the back sliding door and watch it snow! THEN after the snow stops, it’s time to bundle up the twins…..easier said than done…to play in the snow for a while!

Teachers love snow days, too! I bet my idea of snow days will change as my son grows from a toddler anxious about stepping in snow to a boy who loves to sled! I will be a busier momma!

Snow days in Michigan don’t mean you have to stay inside, quite the opposite! There’s snow people to build, sledding, snow angels, snowball fights… Endless possibilities! After playing out in the snow, there’s always a hot cup of cocoa or tea waiting and usually some soup and hot sandwiches. Naps are sure to follow πŸ™‚ Kristen F. designbykeea at gmail dot com

Honestly? Cleaning. I hate to clean. But on snow days when the hubby is home, it is so nice to get some things done when he can help watch the baby. And I can take the whole day to get one project done. No need to rush. Clean a little. Get a little distracted with email. Clean. Have a snack. Snag a kiss from my baby. Clean. Kiss the hubby. It is heavenly.

We love popping some corn (even early hours of the day) snuggling up in bed with the curtains open just enough to see the snow falling and watch some movies. Once we finally get the “lazy” out of us we’ll open the curtains all the way and the boys try to count the flakes. That doesn’t last very long though – I think the flakes win that battle πŸ™‚

My little guy is only 14 months old.. they aren’t too many activities that we can do yet. I love taking him out side when it is snowing though. The wonder on his face is magical. It reminds me that simple things can be beautiful and can make your day great.
As for soething I have to have a snowy day… homemade hot chocolate. I tend to make it by the cup so I won’t drink as much. 1 cup hot milk, mixed with 2 Tbsp baking cocoa, 2 Tbsp sugar (or sweetner subsitute of choice to equal same amount as sugar), and a dash of salt. Once blended together well… make sure your cocoa doesn’t clump! add 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract. You can top it with anything you like… peppermint candy, cinnamons, whipped, cream or marshmallows! Yum. I good book and a cosy blanket are also nice to have if I get time to read!! πŸ˜‰
