Shopping for a newborn or infant can be fun — whether you’re shopping for your own little one or another beloved baby in your life. But, it can also be a bit tricky! They’re not old enough to have specific interests like sports, characters, or even colors. And, if they have older siblings, they will inherit lots of hand-me-down toys, clothes, and more. You want to get them something fun or practical that they’ll use throughout their childhood, so here is a list of ideas to get you started!

Start baby’s book collection. Baby will do little more than chew on books (check out Indestructibles) for the first year of life, but it’s a wonderful investment into their childhood! Stock their bookshelf with the classics or even special-order a personalized storybook featuring baby’s first name! Options are literally endless! The My First Baby Book is a great place to start.

Choose toys with a long shelf-life. Give toys that aren’t for a specific gender or narrow age-range. Choose something that will get played with for several years: a variety of blocks in different shapes and sizes, small cars, soft dolls (boy or girl!), balls, bath toys, and basic puzzles. (Plan Toys, Green Toys, Melissa & Doug, and Learning Resources are brands that are my personal favorites!)

Choose an item that doesn’t have a lot of small or breakable pieces. They’ll inevitably get lost and then the toy is useless. Toys that encourage open-ended play will allow a child to use their own creative imagination rather than act as “audience” to a fancy beeping gadget that only does one specific thing. Also, bonus points if the toy doesn’t require batteries. There are never enough batteries in the house if you have 20 different toys that need them!

Choose a gift that means something. Shop from local businesses or a company that gives some of its proceeds towards a good cause like Share the Love. Or even hand-make a baby blanket or knit booties!

Give something that baby needs. A few extra clothing items, brightly-colored sippy cups, bowls and spoons, cute bibs, new shoes, hat-and-mittens set, or even cloth diapers!

Do a little product research! Make sure your gift has good product reviews, is well-made, and non-toxic. You don’t want to give something that is going to fall apart or be recalled in six months.

Hopefully, this list will help you choose the perfect gift for that special baby in your life!  And, when you’re not sure what to give, send a Cotton Babies gift certificate — instantly!

Books are my two boys favorite gift. We use them all the time.
