Sleep Troubleshooting part 2
May 24, 2008 10:20 pm | by

This is part 3 in my series on baby sleep. (Part 1, Part 2) Here are some more ideas for troubleshooting your baby’s sleep. Short Naps: Those 15-20 minute naps are killers! Just when you think you FINALLY get a break the baby is up before you have fully formed a thought about how relieved you are. This takes a little work on your part but it can help to stretch out naptimes. Put your baby down for a nap as usual, but don’t go anywhere. Sit nearby where you can hear when baby starts to stir. (This is where

Sleep Troubleshooting
May 24, 2008 12:14 pm | by

In my last post I wrote about setting up good sleep habits. But while setting up good habits gives you a general framework of good sleep, there are always still problems to be had. Here are the basics of a few: Days and Nights Mixed Up: A lot of babies start out their life like this. When you are newly postpartum and exhausted it can be hard to handle. Keeping the baby in bright rooms during the day and dark rooms at night help baby’s circadian rhythm to get sorted out better. Time itself is the only other cure. Startling/Fussy

Sleep, Sweet Sleep
May 21, 2008 11:34 am | by

Almost the first thing out of anyone’s mouth when they start asking questions about someone’s baby is, “Are they sleeping through the night?” or “Is he a good sleeper?” No matter what the actual answer is, I usually just say yes and move on, I don’t really want to give everyone the play-by-play of how things are going with regards to our nighttime routines and how they may or may not be working right now. There are some people I know who have fabulous sleepers. Their children seem to sleep well from the day of birth and are easy to

Me and My Lamby
April 5, 2008 1:59 pm | by

Lambies are the best. For my last four kids I have used one and it has been so handy. That fuzzy little rug can do just about anything. We have had our lamby for over ten years now and it still looks pristine. It has been through 4 kids – well it is on its fourth kid and there is not a stain to be found on it. It is still lofty and cuddly and perfect as ever. Some uses for your Lamby Lambskin: Before baby is born, sleep on it yourself. It is wonderfully cushy on those sore hips

The Spring Weather Clothing Puzzle
March 10, 2008 12:47 pm | by

I realize that in many places Spring weather hasn’t yet hit. But here in my neck of the woods it is creeping up fast. One of the difficult things about Spring is that I never know what to wear. In one day the temps can go from cold to hot and back again and while that is only a minor annoyance for a grown-up, it is a little trickier for babies. Cold babies are crabby babies, hot babies are crabby babies, but babies who are just right are happy. And since happy babies make happy parents, we want to dress

Food for Tot

I had hoped that the time would stand still. Breastfeeding is going so swimmingly with Lily, I hate to add the complication of other foods. But the clock never stops, nor does Lily stop growing into her own little person. In the spare moments I scrape out of my day before falling asleep I have been reading Child of Mine by Ellyn Satter and I am finding it remarkably full of common sense. It is a breath of fresh air and gives me hope that the current problems I am having feeding my 3 year old healthy food (he would

It’s Easier Now!
February 2, 2008 7:48 pm | by

While I was in the throes of cloth diapering my newborn this time around, I realized I had forgotten how much babies pee. I think I must have blocked it out from the last few times, or maybe it is because I didn’t have it written in a blog somewhere. But now it will be saved forever for posterity. Babies pee a lot. And they pee often. Newborns pee almost continually, I think, at least it seems that way sometimes! But then with Lily there came a day, at around 3 months, when I realized that cloth diapering had just

Blog posts from cloth diapering moms
December 10, 2007 12:56 pm | by

I was giggling this morning as I read through some of the blog posts that came through my inbox over the weekend. Here are a few of my favorites: She tried! Hayden’s mama posted photos of her attempts at using cloth diapers here. The photos were taken from a distance so I can’t tell for sure what it is that is on the baby. One photo looks like it is a prefold, but then the front of the diaper looks like it might be something else. Any thoughts?http://babyhaydenspage.blogspot.com/ Classic marital discussions over diapers. Jack’s mama is learning about when she

A happy mama gets more sleep
November 14, 2007 12:17 pm | by

We’ve often heard from parents that their baby sleeps longer when using a cloth diaper that keeps the baby dry at night. This morning, we found a blog post from one of those moms! She just switched to bumGenius yesterday and wrote this post this morning: These diapers are just as easy to use as disposables and they are SUPER absorbent, so even when baby gets wet, he doesn’t feel wet – thus, he is able to sleep comfortably through the night and theoretically, Mommy and Daddy can too. Hallelujah! When you stop and think about it, this makes perfect sense.
