Real Mom Talk: Babywearing
October 8, 2013 6:56 am | by

I’ve been a baby-wearer since I first became a mom. That was seven years ago, when my oldest was born. I started out with a sling and then tried a Mei-Tei style carrier. Then I acquired a ring sling. And an Ergo. So it’s safe to say that I have several different baby wearing options and I love each one for different reasons.     Baby wearing was key for my sanity when my kids were infants. Three out of four of them had reflux and staying upright helped keep them comfortable and lessened the amount of crying (both theirs and

Why we use Amber Teething Necklaces
October 1, 2013 3:51 am | by

My husband and I have put baltic amber necklaces on both our children from the age of around 4 months to almost 2 years old. I wanted to share why we use amber teething necklaces. You might have seen adorable babies, toddlers, around 4 months to almost 2 years old, and even adults sporting these darkly beaded necklaces. The beads are made of baltic amber, which is not actually a gemstone, but a resin.  When this resin is warmed by the skin of the wearer, it releases a tiny amount of healing oil that is said to have analgesic properties. In

Real Mom Talk: Baby Food Made Easy
August 6, 2013 9:20 am | by

In recent years there has been an explosion of cookbooks, small appliances, and other niche products on the market specifically designed to help you create delicious and nutritious homemade baby food.  And while these gadgets are incredibly useful and convenient, it is not necessary to invest in a bunch of expensive equipment in order to serve your baby fresh, healthy, great-tasting first foods.  You can get started by using items that you probably already have in your kitchen. Why did I choose to make homemade baby food?  Simply put, I thought it would be a great way to provide a

Real Mom Talk: Swimming with Cloth Diapers
July 30, 2013 11:12 am | by

If you’re anything like us, you might live near the pool, splash park, or sprinklers! As a cloth diapering mama, the thought of having to switch to disposables just for swim diapers grated against my conscience. But never fear, you don’t have to change your reusable diapering habits just because the weather is warm and you want your baby to stay cool in the pool! Here are my two favorite ways to cloth diaper for swimming season.  Cloth swim diapers. The Imse Vimse brand cloth swim diaper is not only reliable, but also comes with the option of buying a

Real Mom Talk: Celebrate Summer
July 9, 2013 9:03 am | by

Summer: the word evokes memories of long hot days filled with sprinklers, bike rides, day camp, and ice cream cones. And although the season may be reduced to mere nostalgia for us grown-ups, that doesn’t mean it has to lose its magic for the kiddos! Beat boredom with some of the activities below, before the lazy days of summer pass by! Take advantage of what your community has to offer. Many smaller municipalities offer summer concerts, movies in the park, kid’s fishing derbies, and other family-friendly events for the community. Check your town’s website or newspaper for a calendar of

Real Mom Talk: A Guide to Babyshower Gifts
July 2, 2013 11:36 am | by

Hooray! Someone you know is having a baby. It’s an exciting time and you get to go celebrate with them. But, wait – what should you bring as a gift? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Here’s the strategy to choose the perfect gift, no matter your budget. Step one: Check out the registry. Most moms-to-be register for everything under the sun. (You can even register at Cotton Babies!) Look early and see if there is something on the list that you loved/your baby loved/someone you know loved. If so, that’s a perfect place to start because you know it’s

Cloth 101: Snaps vs. Hook & Loop
June 10, 2013 12:14 pm | by

This post is somewhat of a conversion story. When I first started cloth diapering, I was hook and loop all the way, baby! I’d never diapered a baby before, and hook and loop mimics the ease of disposables. You just pull the tabs tight and let go. What could be easier? My entire stash consisted of BumGenius 3.0 (now 4.0‘s) and AIO Organic (now Elementals) hook and loop diapers. A big advantage of hook and loop is the smaller learning curve for other caregivers. We had a nanny for my son’s first year of life, and it was easy for

Real Mom Talk: Delivering at a Birth Center
June 4, 2013 9:01 am | by

Hi! I’m Jenny, and I had two natural births at the same birth center — in two years. I get a lot of questions about my experience at a birth center, so I thought I’d write down a few thoughts for any of you moms out there who might be considering a birth center for your next baby’s birth! The room in the birth center where both my babies were born What is a birth center? First of all, a birth center is not a hospital, although many birth centers in urban areas are located right next to a hospital

Real Mom Talk: I knew I was a mom when…
May 8, 2013 3:00 pm | by

On this Mother’s Day, I (and every other mom in the country) will get to celebrate the honor that is being their child’s mother. But this year, I’ll be approaching May with nervous excitement because by the time Mother’s Day rolls around, I’ll be 40 weeks pregnant with our third child, which is an honor indeed! And even with the impending arrival of said third child (who literally seems to be trying to kick his way out of my womb), I’m still often taken aback by the hilarity and profoundness that comes with being a mom. I’ve realized my station

Real Mom Talk: Off to the Zoo
May 1, 2013 2:30 pm | by

Now that the weather is (finally) warm, it’s time to start planning our outdoor activities. One of my favorite places to take the kids is the zoo. It’s perfect: sunshine, animals, and (fairly) contained spaces for children to explore. What more can you ask for? Don’t overthink the venue. Kids will be equally thrilled with a zoo complete with African safari or a farm with a few horses and cows. Everything is fun for them. Some of Vicki’s favorite experiences were feeding turtles animal crackers at the lamest zoo I’ve ever been to. She didn’t care – for her, seeing
