What’s in a Name Like Maathai?
February 14, 2017 12:18 pm | by

Truly Genius Tuesday has returned! Since today is Valentine’s Day, which is traditionally filled with all things pink and red and lovely, we decided to feature Maathai. This sweet print joined our Genius Series with Irwin in March of 2013.

What’s in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet; ~ William Shakespeare, Romeo & Juliet (1)

In addition to her wonderful accomplishments, this genius is known for being a bit of a tongue twister around Cotton Babies. She sells sea shells by the sea shore… well no… our Genius didn’t sell sea shells by the seashore, that we know of, but we had to prep ourselves to say her awesome name Wangari Muta Maathai, we even found a YouTube video to make sure we’ve been saying “Muh-thigh” right all this time. Shew!

But what does her name represent?

Power, Strength, Tenacity, Fortitude. All characteristics that make Maathai a perfect addition to the Genius Series. Maathai was the first African women and environmentalist to win the Nobel Peace Prize. She was awarded the honor for her “contribution to sustainable development, democracy and peace.” (2) in 2004. She dedicated her life to her passions as Kenyan political and environmental activist who founded the Green Belt Movement, an environmental non-governmental organization focused on planting trees, conservation and women’s rights.” Maathai knew the value of perseverance and because she did not give up, she changed the world.

“Every person who has ever achieved anything has been knocked down many times. But all of them picked themselves up and kept going, and that is what I have always tried to do.”  – Wangari Maathai (3)

Introducing an addition to the “Never Were” series!

As we celebrate Maathai and her wonderful accomplishments this week, we wanted to give you a little glimpse into our creative process at Cotton Babies. You may be familiar with our “Never Were” diapers (learn more about this series here)… Introducing our newest addition to this series, Flowers!

Our designers are always coming up with beautiful new prints! When we finally get to the fabric sampling part of the process, we sometimes request different color variations… Which is how we ended up with Flowers, now available on eBay.

TODAY ONLY!

In honor of today’s featured genius, we have a VERY small amount of bumGenius Littles, bumGenius 4.0 pocket cloth diapers, Flip Diaper Covers available at Cotton Babies! Plus, all Maathai Genius Series Tees are $4 off today only! Cloth diaper inventory of Maathai is very limited and only available while supplies last.

Don’t forget the giveaway!

Of course, we can’t celebrate our Genius Series without a giveaway! Enter for a chance to win the Maathai Prize Pack, including a Maathai bumGenius 4.0 Cloth Diaper + Genius Series Tee.

It is a super cute print. But in all honesty I wouldn’t keep it. Its a bit too girly for my all boy household. So it would go to my niece that is due any day now. My boys first cousin on my side!!

This print came out when my little boy was a baby. I bought Irwin and he loved it, but passed on the cute flowers because i didn’t know if I’d have another girl. Fast-forward 5ish years and I have a new precious girl and would love to have that print I passed up back then. Love the simple, adorable flower print! I tried for one of these on the website on Tuesday and arrived too late. 🙁
