What are the differences between the Elemental 1, 2 & 3?
June 21, 2017 8:00 am | by

Last fall, Cotton Babies launched their new and improved Elemental All-In-One cloth diaper. As the third version of the Elemental created, it has the best of both designs from the previous two versions. All three of these diapers are one-size, fitting babies 8-35 lbs, and feature organic cotton inserts, so no stuffing needed. While these features did not change between the three versions, there are a few features that did. Here’s are the major differences between the three versions to help you compare, contrast and find the best diaper for your family.

Original Elemental (OBGE)

The Original Elemental was first created in 2009 as just an organic all-in-one cloth diaper; before it received the “Elemental” name. This version has organic cotton lining throughout the diaper, plus the sewn-in inserts. The elastics around the legs are rolled to be soft on baby’s thighs. The diaper can still be purchased in a limited selection of prints here. Once the second version was released, this diaper became known as the Original bumGenius Elemental, or OBGE.

Elemental 2 (E2)

The second version, briefly known as the New Elemental (NBGE), was released in 2013. Three major differences were noted between the first and second version: One of the biggest changes between the two designs was the cotton lining, which was removed as a feature in the second Elemental (E2), exposing the PUL and providing this version with the next noted difference: a trimmer fit! The Elemental is already the trimmest bumGenius diaper made, and the E2 made it even trimmer. And lastly, the elastics were encased rather than rolled, and the inserts were designed wider and attached at the top of the PUL, making it easier to put additional inserts under the attached inserts for naps or nighttime. Once the E3 was released and took over the title of “New Elemental”, the second version then became known as E2 and can still be purchased here.

Elemental 3 (E3)

In 2016, Cotton Babies announced the release of their newest Elemental design, which came to be known as the E3. This design took the previous two versions and combined them. In my opinion, it really is the best of both worlds. One of the biggest updates to this new design was the reintroduction of the organic cotton lining. In addition, instead of two inserts, there’s only one. This made the diaper even more trim, but still super absorbent. And finally, because of the cotton lining, the elastics also went back to rolled instead of encased, keeping marks off of baby’s thighs. The E3 is the latest version of the Elemental and can be purchased here.

Which version of the Elemental is your favorite?

Thank you so much for doing this breakdown! I have been curious as to how they’ve changed and the illustrations on the page just don’t help like an actual picture. Seeing the. side by side with your descriptions were very helpful.
